From the Bible Belt of Americas deep South comes research claiming that the most prosperous and least corrupt nations are the ones "where large percentages of the population believe in hell." Really? Seven out of ten Yanks believe in hell but they still managed to give us Al Capone, Clinton, Watergate and Enron. Hallelujah. ;)

In academic circles it's "publish or perish" and no-one seems to mind what you publish. Obviously this research is on a par with David Irving's Holocaust work.

Lliam, what "Bible Belt" school produced that research?
Also, we don't refer to ourselves as Yanks, (especially us born here south of the Mason Dixon line, thankfully I'm education so it doesn't actually offend me like it does some of the true red-necks). That would be like us still calling you the red-coats. Well, sort of I guess.(I'm not being judgmental. . .just making a funny out of how us southerners feel about ourselves).
Oh, and would you believe I took a class on the Antebellum South a few years ago, and our professor corrected each student who said "us" or "we" in place of the South. Being from the north, she was correcting everyone in the class but herself. ;)
Besides that, who said that Al Capone, Clinton, or the people involved in Watergate and Enron actually belong to that group of 7/10 that believes in hell? ;)

Lliam, I saw that news article last week on Yahoo. Apparently, a lot of people require the threat of infinite punishment for finite transgressions to keep them moral. Scary stuff. I had hoped we had gotten to the point were we understood that if you live in a society where theft is approved, you are more likely to be stolen from.

Serenity, as a card-carrying member of the Libertarian Party, thanks for posting the links.

I wonder how such ideals might fare in a cradle-to-grave place like Lliam's from?

Lliam,

What I was trying (apparently not very well) to point out that the people who gave us the American scandals you listed were as representative of the American people as were the people who brought us the British Scandals I listed representative of the British people.

And yes. I was using the roundhead term to point out that "Yankee" to the best of my knowledge was used mainly in the Civil War (or The War of Northern Aggression, depending what side of the Mason-Dixon line you were raised on) or as a result of it.

We in the UK refer to all Americans, affectionately as, 'Yank's' I guess it's stems from, WW2. Those of you old enough would remember the song, 'Over There'

Over There, Over There........... oh the Yank's are coming, the Yank's are coming. Didn't, James Cagney sing it in the movie, 'Yankee Doodle Dandy'?

Lliam,

"Over There" written by George M. Cohan in 1917 was a very populat WWI song. I'm sure it still got a lot of play during WWII.

All together now!!

Over There

Johnnie, get your gun,
Get your gun, get your gun,
Take it on the run,
On the run, on the run.
Hear them calling, you and me,
Every son of liberty.
Hurry right away,
No delay, no delay,
Make your daddy glad
To have had such a lad.
Tell your sweetheart not pine,
To be proud her boy's in line.
Chorus
Over there, over there,
Send the word, send the word over there--
That the Yanks are coming,
The Yanks are coming,
The drums rum-tumming
Ev'rywhere.
So prepare, say a pray'r,
Send the word, send the word to beware.
We'll be over, we're coming over,
And we won't come back till it's over
Over there.

Johnnie, get your gun,
Get your gun, get your gun,
Johnnie show the Hun
Who's a son of a gun.
Hoist the flag and let her fly,
Yankee Doodle do or die.
Pack your little kit,
Show your grit, do your bit.
Yankee Doodle fill the ranks,
From the towns and the tanks.
Make your mother proud of you,
And the old Red, White and Blue.
(repeat chorus twice)

I dunno about all that. If'n I goes to England, I think I'd rather get out my cow-horn helmet and best woolies, braid my hair up, and take the Viking Longboat tour. My great-uncle Olaf had a better time in WWI than did my g'gfer Roy. He never bought into the enthusiasm dreck, being a dour Swede, and Roy was an innocent Tennessee boy inclined to believe the preachers and politicians.

Olaf figured it all for a much delayed reverse raid, gathered up his best berserker attitude, had a superior time of it all. Roy was shocked, shocked I say, by the sillinesses committed by generals and such - charge across open ground? Have you lost your flippin' mind? Every good ol' country boy knows better than that! Smart boys hide behind trees and rocks and bushes, shoot from holes in the ground. They both came home with a low opinion of officers in general, and gallant European officers in particular.

Oh, and either or both would've shot you dead, on the spot, had you called them a Yank. Mortal insult, that.
