Having just returned from a 2 month stay in Portland, Or. for clinical rotations, I'm heading back for Turkey Day with the people I just left because my brother and sister-in-law couldn't decide if they were going to host a party this year (this pregnancy thing is tiring I guess). Yep, I've been home for a whole 4 days. In years past, we always played Bingo and my aunty debby went all out with prizes. They were cheap and plastic but the competition of the game blinded us to the fact that we would have no use for the prizes except to rub it in each others faces in the heat of battle. And grandma cheated then told us grandkids to cheat when we weren't winning. This year we decided to try a new game - cranium. We had tried to institute new games in the past but bingo won out every year. My all time favorite prize was my rudolph blinking nose...and the parachute men.

The 6 hour drive back took 11. Ugh.

We did not do any outings while there. My brother had a Nintendo that kept my son busy. Food was plentiful and great. Lots of company.

Several trees bit the dust and my brother's view of the lake improved.

Now it's on to working hard to finish up Christmas woodworking projects and decorating the AOL tree.

My procedure indicated nothing unusual other than healthier than expected, so I'm pleased. I was a bit taken aback at how many people it took, though. I may post my observations on another thread.

We went to visit my grandmother in Ohio (about a 9 hour drive if the traffic cooperates) but we had heard horror stories about the Pennsylvania Turnpike and other major roads, so we took US50, which goes west out of DC through VA and WV to Cincinatti. We found almost NO traffic, and the roundabout route only took us an extra hour with better scenery to boot.

Grandma's 102 years old, so I know my visits to her are quite precious, and I try to get up there as often as I can. She's doing better than you might expect, but this time I noticed she doesn't remember as much as she did. She still knows me quite well, but a lot of the details she used to know (like the wallpaper in my room when I was 3) have gone away.

eaphil, that was wonderful. This would be a better society if we all could experience something like that, at least once in our lives.

Thank you for sharing it with us.

Good golly, barfle, thats some memory. I cant remember the wallpaper from my own room when I was three! Im glad you were able to enjoy another holiday w/ Grandma.

OT is best able to describe our outing. Im just darn glad we were traveling with a "local" at both ends of the trip, 'cause we stayed off fwy as much as possible, saving our sanity.

There were times grandma would tell me things that I hadn't thought of, but when she mentioned things I would remember them, and she was never wrong, so I don't doubt the things she said that I didn't remember.

I note that there are two good things about having a grandma who is 102 years old. Most important, of course, is that I still have my grandma. Second is that it's really nice to have those genes in my family!

Hope all have a great holiday. I am not looking forward to mine. I would much prefer to stay home. I've been 'ordered' by one of my step-sisters to arrive with a dessert & beverages, no later than 11:30 AM tomorrow, and that we will eat promptly at Noon.

I just love holidays with anal-retentive control freaks.

I have tried many times to get out of Thanksgiving, since I don't like turkey, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries and yams.

A most excellent chinese restaurant is open tomorrow. I might just have my holiday there!

To my sister's house in Tulsa, then gonna take a trip out west for a week or two.

Have I got something backwards - visiting daughter in Key West in July, and son in Idaho in December?

Just got back from accompanying the missus to a Teachers' Union conference at a hotel in Jerusalem. I give thanks for getting back to home cooking.
Rainy and chilly for a couple of days - an autumn heatwave (70+ degrees F) now on.
Heard a news snippet about a discovery on the beneficial effects of cranberry sauce on dental health etc. Anyone know anything about that?

Accompanied by fabulous food.

Just back yesterday am from my sister in Denver's house. Excellent thanksgiving! Had lovely weather the whole time (though I left fleeing the incoming front), went to Phantom of the Opera on Friday evening (wow!)

Still having leftovers. Somehow, one turkey makes twelve meals for two people.

But that's OK. I like turkey, and I even have a few recipes I make all year long.

Do we need a recipes thread, or is there one to resurrect?

There is definitely one recipes thread, there may be two. Resurrect away!
We had guests,so ate most of the leftovers on Friday. I may have to roast part of a bird, to have for sandwiches, etc.

My dad deepfried the turkey. It was most delish, especially the skin.

That thread had some odd recipes! Maybe we can resurrect it with some odd holiday recipes.
