With Starbucks, the coffee is free. You're paying for the privelege of sitting in a trendy, upscale mass-market coffee house.

Even the paper cups just breathe "trendy" and "upscale", do they not?

Pumpkin enjoys baking with me - I should let him measure some time....pretty much I've been measuring and he's been dumping and mixing. Bella likes stirring too... May have to transition to letting Bella dump and stir, and let Pumpkin measure. I may soon be reduced to just getting prepared and putting stuff in the oven! (Too bad Pumpkin got past his 'washing dishes is fun' phase) Amazingly I've never made meatballs before...have made meatloaf though. Maybe a good rainy weekend afternoon project. As Pumpkin is in the 'Younger School Age' group at the daycare for the summer, they have a more structured plan for the summer than for the younger kids. One week is cooking/food/nutrition - I bet after that he'll want to try more stuff at home. This week is science stuff. They're doing something on sea creatures today - going to the Rochester Museum and Science Center tomorrow for their weekly Wednesday field trip. I've been told it's better for about ages 7+, thus I haven't taken him there yet...

Yeah - most coffee houses feel 'cool'...and the chai is creamier than what I can make with tea bags...
but I can get a bag of a mix (which is pretty much what the coffee houses use) for $9.99, boil my own water and get 8 cups of it, vs $3.00+ each for them to make it for me. I guess I'd have to have my own whipped cream too.... The liquid chai that you mix 1/2 and 1/2 with milk comes out pretty good - going to get a supply for the summer - really fast to make if you want it cold!
I do regularly (~1/week) visit a local coffee shop and get a chai there - supporting local businesses! I avoid Starbucks...could get Chai for ~$1.50 at Dunkin Do, but it's way sweeter and I doubt has much caffine.
I'm drinking more tea lately as I'm trying to kick the soda habit. Luckily, I like my iced tea unsweetened (just brew with a mint or berry flavored bag with the regular bags), and like Splenda in my Chai.

The wife and I drink lots of iced tea, also unsweetened. Being on the border of the 'deep South', that used to be a problem, since iced teas was always synonymous with 'tea-coloured-iced-sugar-water'. Apparently, the influx of northern tourists has led even the 'Dixie Diners' to actually ask if you wnat your tea sweetened or unsweetened when you order. Progress comes to Dixie!

I have a cheap espresso machine, but never use it. I really need to sit down some time with a bag of fresh-ground coffee and keep making expresso until I get it right. It'd save money in the long run, since I pay too much for espresso when I'm in the mood for it. Once I get espresso down, making a decent latte, mocha, or cappucino would follow. I can make a decent pot of drip-coffee, but that's the limit of my brewing skills.

Meat, Catherine De Medici style

1 fist sized chunk 'o trimmed pork loin
1 cup chicken broth
1 cup Marsala
1 bunch of celery tops, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
2 smashed cloves of garlic

Put everything in a crockpot for six hours or so. Remove meat. Strain juice into pan. Reduce until a viscous sauce forms. Pour over meat 'n eat.

I found this in a book I was reading about Catherine and adapted it. Apparently she brought this recipe and some cooks with her from Italy, where a cooking floresence was happening. If you don't have a crockpot, just use a pan and cook the heck out of the meat.

Some Marsalas have spice added. I think these work well with this recipe--spicier is nicier.

The pork dish sounds good.
I used to make my own lattes. Not as pretty, but easy, quick, inexpensive.

had some really good coffee in NZ. Am going on line to see if can order it.
(supermarket was out of it when we went to stock up).

I'll ship you a lightweight suitcase and some cash. You can bring the suitcase over when you come, full of coffee! :) On the way home, you'll have all that space for souvenirs.

Urrrpppp. What a belly buster and artery clogger. KFC has NEVER put out any healthy food or for that matter anything worth eating. Popeye's on the other hand........well, I must admit to indulging in the fried, spicy chix once in a great while. I usually stick to white meat though.

I have my doubts about that new sandwich. The corporate lawyers will probably have some sort of a release for customers to sign. :deal:

Meanwhile, I still think that the KFC cole slaw is the best that there is, and it's also the best thing they make. I do like the grilled chicken (not as well as Pollo Loco) and the fried chicken is, well, it's fried chicken. It's good. "Fried" is automatically "not health food". The mashed potatos are atrocious. Don't get 'em. Get another container of the cole slaw instead. I'll be the occasional KFC customer as long as they have the cole slaw.

Pork recipe

1 lb. trimmed pork tenderloin
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup water
3 tbspns brown sugar
2 tsps sea salt
3/4 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp chili powder
two smashed cloves of garlic

Put everything into the crockpot on low for half a day or so. This reminds me of southern-style BBQ, but also Filipino adobo--which basically is pork cooked in vinegar. I like this recipe better. For adobo, here's one I use:

pork adobo

1 lb. trimmed pork tenderloin
3 tbspns soy sauce
2 big cloves of minced garlic
1/4 tsp pepper
1 small bay leaf
1/4 cup lemon juice

Cut the meat into bite sized pieces, brown inna pan over med heat, add other ingredients. Cover and simmer a while. Don't allow it to dry out. Eat.

KFC has NEVER put out ... anything worth eating

Maybe my memory is faulty, but back in the 60's I think they had more concern about product quality. Today it seems like they cook all their chicken before they open and let it sit in a cabinet all day to keep warm. That way the meat dries out while the outside gets soggy. Yum! They used to have a first rate gravy, too. I understand it was too labor-intensive for the new owners and they did away with that recipe. Too bad.

A good product gone wrong.

I still like the grilled chicken. The fried chicken isn't bad. The biscuits are good. The cole slaw is extremely good.

And, trust me, the fat lady's a good cook. My opinion counts as an informed, nay, expert opinion!

Butter Cookies

My daughter loves these

1/3 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
2 tspns vanilla extract
1/2 tsp almond extract
1 big egg
2 cups flour
1tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt

Combine softened butter and sugar in a big bowl with a mixer. Add egg and extracts, mix some more. Combine flour, powder, and salt. Add a little at a time to the butter/sugar while mixing. Spray Pam on a cookie sheet, place blobs of batter, bake at 375 degrees for 8 min. or so.

edited because I forgot to include butter as an ingredient

I like to flake the pork with two forks then put it on toasted buns as a sandwich.
