Build or List your Perfect Martini

Postby DavidEB310 » Wed Mar 09, 2005 1:29 pm

To the Martini Drinkers out there, what’s your special?

Example,

Grey Goose (Vanilla, perhaps?) Vodka with a splash of Kahlua, shaken, not stirred with crushed ice.

Chocolate Covered Cherries or Multi-colored M and M’s sit in the bottom of the glass and melt to taste.

Dave,

I prefer Absolut Vodka Martini's
Extra Dry, Straight Up, with lots of Olives!!!

No Ice - Will only dilute the alcohol!

That's a Black Russian, not a Martini. A Martini is gin and vermouth (hopefully, only enough vermouth to coat the ice cubes).

And of course vodka straight up is, well, vodka.

Shaking a cocktail intensifies the flavors because it introduces tiny air bubbles into the mixture, and waters it down because of the melting ice. I prefer mine stirred. The Martini will be stronger and clearer.

RichC,

Au contraire, A Black Russian has more Kahlua than simply a splash, simply over ice (Thus making for a very dark cocktail, hence the Black Russian).

The Martini, and yes, traditionally, it WAS made with Gin, is now widely accepted as being made with Vodka (even the James Bond in the later movies ordered a Vodka Martini, shaken not stirred).

Above, The Martini is mostly Vodka versus the Kahlua (and we are using Vanilla Vodka). If, we want to get technical, I guess you could throw in a splash of Vermouth (that's sweet not dry to the sweet Kahlua) to keep it identifiable as a Martini.

That's what I'm looking for -- the NEW Martini's of today, such as the fame of the Appletini for example.

Or the Expresso Martini or Chocolate Martini's for other examples (BTW, both are very good).

I also like SKYY vodka (over Absolut), however, Grey Goose is definetly terrific, and Chopin is quite smooth.

Judging from all the above, a martini is

(1) any mix of liquors and/or liqueurs
and
(2) in a martini glass.

Details no longer important.

You might like a drink made with Vodka, but it's not a Martini. Only Gin can make a true Martini! :D

i do not drink martinis because i do not enjoy vermuth. however, Bombay Sapphire is a dazzling gin!

I like chocolate covered strawberry martinis. I tried an orange creamsicle martini but it was kind of gross. I doubt either is a "true martini"

TrumpetMaster-

A Dirty Martini is:

2 oz gin
1 tbsp dry vermouth
2 tbsp olive juice
2 olives

Yes you can make it with Vodka! I've had them, they are very good. But I suggest Grey Goose.

Nicole Marie,

I never put Olive Juice in. Alway added extra olives as they taste so gooood after marinating in the drink.

Will definitely try this and get myself some
Grey Goose.

Thanks!!!

TM :)

lioness (and other gin traditionalists),

Here's a bit of Vodka Martini History; it's all over the web (and followed in philosophy in the New England Martini bars I frequent occasionally):

;)

History of the Martini
The Martini cocktail was created and named after a New York Hispanic bar tender by the name of Martinez in 1911. It was made from two parts Noilly Prat (French dry vermouth, no Italian vermouth in NY at the time) and two parts Gin (source 'The Aperitif Companion' by Andrew Jones).
Martinez changed the name of the drink to Martini in much the same way 'Peter's Coffee and Doughnuts' might suddenly become 'Bistro Pierre' and charge double. The Martini was made the most recognizable cocktail by James Bond 007, so much so in fact that the straight cocktail glass is commonly referred to as a martini glass.
According to one version the recipe for Vodka Martini started to appear on the back of Smirnoff Vodka to capitalize on the popularity of the drink, according to another version the Martini drunk by 007 is a Vodka Martini.

Vodka Martini

One third Dry Vermouth.
Two thirds Vodka.
Garnish with one Olive

or

How do I make a Vodka Martini?
A Vodka Martini is Bond’s drink of choice. The Vodka Martini usually consists of 1.5 - 2 oz of Vodka and anything from a ‘dash’ to 1oz Dry Vermouth. This is then topped off with an optional olive. Normally any drink containing a spirit would be stirred to avoid ‘bruising’ it - however, Bond prefers shaking the drink as it allows the liquid to mix with the ice and therefore become colder.

No, No TrumpetMaster! You must add the olive juice, it gives the drink the look of dirty bathwater... hence the dirty martini! ;) Once a bartender mashed the olives to a pulp... best dirty martini I've ever had!
