Don't forget Yao Ming, RC. While he may not be 'average' he is certainly not alone over there. I think many Westerners tend to lump all Chinese (and perhaps all Orientals [am I being insensetive using that word?]) into a collective 'pot' and feel they all meet a stereotypical mold that includes a smaller than average (for Westerners) skeletal structure. This is far from the truth. We forget the sheer size of China and the fact it is very diverse in many ways just as the USA is diverse.

hey GC... Asian is a much better a word to use than Oriental.

"Red" skin? No. I imagine that was an attempt to distinguish Native American indians from what anyone had previously known. Like, I'm not really white either.

ROFL!!! that was great.

btw... a very flat backside?? where did you get that from?

Native Americans

GC, here is an interesting site about the Asian ancestory theory. You'll notice they also mention the height/"heavy build" discrepency in the Great Plains Indians.

AMEN! What is it with America and not being American? Why does everyone claim to be Irish or German or what-have-you when you were born here, your parents were born here, your grandparents were born here? You got a name several centuries ago, maybe someone made it up. You American, kid! Natives/Islanders, excepted, of course . . .

I think people want to hold on to their heritage in any way they can. . .since are all essentially melting together.

My family has Apache in our blood. . .a great great grandmother or something mixed with our typical German stock here in Texas and we came out with an interesting mix: dark dark brown hair that blondes in the sun, dark blue eyes, fair, freckled skin that burns once and then tans very dark and very easily. I got the short-height(5'2"), flat chested, big rear mix. RC - got plenty in the rear department if you're accepting donations! ;)

There is a great book that was written about Cynthia Parker and Quanah Parker called "Walk with my Soul" (I think). This is a wonderful look at her life (though fictional). The author stuck with the facts and it's such a tragic story.

On our campus there is a statue of Lawrence Sullivan Ross. . .the kids here call him Sully and put pennies on his shoes for luck before exams. I won't go hear him again after hearing about the atrocities he committed in his vendetta against the Native Americans. He is the one who brought Cynthia Ann back to her "true people". Whatever. Schmuck.

There is nothing wrong with holding onto your heritage, but the folks asking these questions compile numbers, (probably looking at quota's)
and stuff like that.

Don't like when it's used for that.

Thanks RC. Most anthropologists today will tell you that 'race' is a characteristic created by man.

So American Indians are thought to come from S.E. Asia. Polynesians are thought to come from Taiwan (DNA analysis), so it's no wonder I think they're the same people. Also no wonder they're all short of body hair. Now I'll go back and read the websites. Thanks to all of you who put those links up.

Lioness, I notice the artist rendering portrays a guy with a beard. Go figure. Isn't that a cool site?

There is something more to claiming race and that of course, is laying claim to a culture. "I belong" is somehow important. Also, battling against hegemony, natural or forced.

I belong to OT's race. It is just coincidence that I ended up living where I did. My grandfathers grandfather was a bit of a letch. Some senator who fathered an entire litter of children with an Indian woman. Her skirts caught fire and the children were orphaned. I have no cultural claim other than life having positioned me right next door to the reservation with a mix of Indians and mudbloods (term from Harry Potter of course).

My maiden name is an Americanized Scottish name that just coincidentally ended up sounding very Indian.

So I went to school with the Indian kids, had just enough physical indian traits and a name that made me sound like I had some reason for being there. Nope.

Learned just enough to realize what a heinous crime was committed not just against the people, but against a culture.

i think the "I belong" should be "i belong to the earth" ;)
