High School Reunion Time?

Postby sadie » Wed Mar 23, 2005 8:54 am

It's that time of year when the invitations go out for high school reunions. Haven't been back to mine yet- but maybe this is the year! Not sure what to expect, people change a lot over 20 years.

Anyone with some good stories?

Had my 20th in 2002.

My wife had the opportunity to meet my old friends (esp. girls...)while under the influence of Long Island Iced Teas -- that was fun.

She somehow met up with a girl that I had kissed back in 5th Grade (we were in an empty classroom right before XMAS break). The classmate told my wife that I was an awkward kisser (I was in 5th grade!), and my wife replied, well he certainly knows how to kiss Now! My wife is a lot of fun while under the influence...

Then, another girl I dated as a Senior came in a painted-on short dress and whispered in my ear (but loud enough for my wife to hear) that she wasn't wearing any underwear...

It was an interesting night.

Ha! That is a funny story. Sounds like you were quite the wild guy in high school!

Now have you reciprocated your wife's good sportsmanship and gone to her reunions as well?

Wow! At least your wife was sufficiently "happy" and didn't get mad. . .

We haven't had one yet. . .maybe by the next milestone people will get their act together. I have a few people I've lost touch with that I'd like to see again. Who knows, might be fun.

Holy smokes Dave!! :D

I butted heads with a former classmate about 3 seconds past the front door. Unfortunately, she was still queen of the same clique of popular girls that had existed in the bad ol days so I was pretty much on the outs all night.

They had arranged for door prizes after dancing, drinks and dinner. Well, I excused myself to the ladies room just as they were drawing names for the grand prize. What d'ya know, (tee hee hee, ha ha ha, ho ho ho) they called my name and I was supposed to get up and accept my prize and say a few words. My husband had to go instead.

OK. First off, you have to know this is a VERY tight knit rural community in the middle of nowhere and very conservative culturally.

My spouse was wearing shorts and sandals (WHAT??!! :D

So when I came out of the ladies room my husband suggested we give the volley ball net away because there was no way we were going to be allowed to carry it onto the plane. I did it anyway.

My 30th year is coming up in June. Can't go because my niece is graduating high school.

I have an identical twin and we went to the same high school.
At our 25th year reunion, on of the students came up to our group and said, I just realized (after 25 years) you were twins. She said she she would see one of us on one side of the building, then the other side. Confused her and for years could not figure out how I moved around the building so fast.

A few fries short of a Happy Meal.

Saxy,

My wife indeed was sufficiently happy as both she and my best friends' wife indulged in spirits.

She actually went up to one guy and convinced him that they went to school together by saying hello and then starting the conversation with, "You don't remember me?"

Fun was had by all.

TM,

I see you and I graduated the same year.

So far as I know, we won't have a reunion this decade. Our 10th was fun, but since most of my classmates hadn't moved more than 10 miles from home, and see each other pretty regularly, it wasn't that big of a deal. It eventually dissolved into the same groups that it was divided into during school.

When it came time for the twentieth, several classes had decided to get together and do a sort of "alumni reunion", which are popular at some of the other small schools in the area. I didn't think it went over well, and I assume others thought so as well, since they haven't been having them since. I've not heard a peep out of anyone about one this year, even though I was down that way Monday for a funeral, and ran into a couple of classmates. I guess we'll do without.

Half the class still meets at the same bar every weekend that they have met at for twenty-five years anyway. It really isn't that big of a deal.

My wife's school has an alumni dinner every year, which we've attened a couple of times. Again, it really isn't that great. Several years ago they decided to move it to a non-drinking facility, and pretty much cut the attendance in half and the fun by 75%. We haven't been back since.

Great stories! I actually went to my husband's reunion recently- he's a local boy. It was fun to meet folks he had spoken about and living on his turf-I've since gotten to know as well. Also, for those of you who are on #2, it's a great way to show the "upgrade".

Compared to the above stories- it was all pretty tame though- I think most of the ladies had underwear on- if they didn't we weren't informed! and we might have left before things got going fully.

Sadie,

Or on #3 or #4...as the reunions hit the higher numbers, so do the marriages!

Funny David! It sounds like you've lived a very full life already!

Well if those ladies keep hustling you at your reunions you may be on #5 or #6 before your 25th reunion!

Shapley,
Pretty cool we graduated the same year.
We never had a 10th. I feel bad that I'll miss the 30th but I must be in New Hampshire for my niece's graduation.

The first time our class got back together was for the 25th.
One guy in the class set up an alumni website as well as alumni email. They meet about once every couple of months in NYC for drinks etc...

It's an incredible way for us to keep in touch with each other.

Regards,
TM

Sadie,

I have neither funds or the desire to go that high in the marriage "Circle of Life."

And something tells me that if the same girl comes up to me at the 50th or beyond Reunion(s) and tells me she's not wearing any underwear, well, it probably just won't have quite the same effect...

However, there are the dirty old man implications...hmmmm.

You are totally correct David. I hear the marriage "circle of life" as you so aptly put it, can bankrupt even the most industrious, hard-working of men.

I have no doubt a savy fella such as yourself would size up the potential lady's finances before the underwear!

You mean you can't do both at the same time?

If she's wearing Victoria's Secret (which is enough to break a man financially anyway) versus white cotten hanes -- well, then you may very well be able to determine the status of her wallet?

And, if she's not wearing any...well, I guess we could always talk about the money later. ;)

Marye,

Pretty cool. I also know from your profile that you often have at least one foot in the graveyard. What is your interest there?

I'm going to #40 this year. I'm on the committee (database manager and transfer of an LP we made to CD). We're approaching 60 as fast as we were approaching 20 back then, so I don't know how much flirting will be going on, but I'll be monitoring it closely.

I took my wife to my 10 year reunion, and she was bored stiff, and hasn't attended any since. It avoids any possible awkwardness with old flames, even if what we did was fully clothed.

Victorian Sculpture, Shap. I photograph "Saving Graces". They are the women who adorn graves that are not Madonnas or Angels. They are women in grief, thus they are sculpted in motion. They are just beautiful to me. This is not to say I don't take a photo of an angel or some other unusually sculpted piece of art, because I do, but I prefer a Saving Grace. The walls of my office are lined with my photos. Interestingly, most people in the law firm, in which I work, find my office strangely comforting, with the low lights, the classical music and the theme of "death" and "dance" on the walls. There is a Degas poster of a dancer. Edvard Munch's poster of "Anxiety" AND a poster of "The Death of Elaine" a painting by Homer Watson.

All strange.. I know.

Probably more than you wanted to know.
