Mothers (Day)

Postby GreatCarouser » Wed Apr 20, 2005 10:30 am

Well, it's just around the corner...I thought they/it should have a prominent place here on the old Triple B. After all, where would we be without them?

As my own dear mom is no longer here I thought I'd start things off with this (He means since she can't get him back for it! UB Ed):
Things My Mother Taught Me
:
1. My mother taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL
DONE.
"If you're going to kill each other, do it outside. I just finished cleaning."

2. My mother taught me RELIGION.
"You better pray that will come out of the carpet."

3. My mother taught me about TIME TRAVEL.
"If you don't straighten up, I'm going to knock you
into the middle of next week!"

4. My mother taught me LOGIC.
"Because I said so, that's why."

5. My mother taught me MORE LOGIC.
"If you fall out of that swing and break your neck,
you're not going to the store with me."

6. My mother taught me FORESIGHT.
"Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you're
in an accident."

7. My mother taught me IRONY.
"Keep crying, and! I'll give you something to cry
about."

8. My mother taught me about the science of OSMOSIS.
"Shut your mouth and eat your supper."

9. My mother taught me about CONTORTIONISM.
"Will you look at that dirt on the back of your
neck!"

10. My mother taught me about STAMINA. "You'll sit
there until all that spinach is gone."

11. My mother taught me about BEHAVIOR
MODIFICATION.
"Stop acting like your father!"

12. My mother taught me JUSTICE.
"One day you'll have kids, and I hope they turn out
just like you!"
Sacred cows make the best hamburger.

A few more momilies:

You shouldn't make that face, it might freeze like that.

You don't have to eat that, but I'm not making anything else.

So if all your friends jump off a cliff, you're going to jump with them?

And there's the all purpose answer: NO!

No, no. I've got one. When we were younger (18-19) before his dad was in the wreck and came out nicer, he used to tell my husband,"I hope you have a son just like yourself one day, as punishment." That statement makes me cry. I think what would be worse, is for us to have a GIRL who behaves that way.

Was trying to think of something my mom always said, but all I can come up with is the following 'poem':

Spring is sprung.
The grass is ris.
I wonder where the birdies is?

Her mom taught her that one...

Hey there Schmeelkie! Welcome. That's a neat little poem.

From a magnet on my fridge:
Home is where your mom is.

Words of Wisdom from my mom (her favorite saying):
"We're not getting any older, just the kids are."

I believe that, now that my oldest is only 10 months younger than I was when she was born.

for all you long distance moms out there... other than seeing your kids, what would be the perfect mom's day gift?

I always liked the poems they wrote for me in grade school best. One year for mothers day I "roasted" my family in rhyme. I thought it was hilarious and had a lot of fun composing it!

My first husband had a really sweet daughter who used to get me thoughtful gifts- based on my interests. Nothing fancy bulbs to plant, running socks, a book.... Although he died a while back she still keeps and touch every mother's day and is a mother herself now!

If mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.

My mother's first language was not English, and although she was fluent, there were sometimes little bobbles, like when she complained that the cat was shedding out of season: "PussyKat is furring! And it's not even fur time!"
Cheers,
Angie

Angie, your mother was not that unusual. My whole family, "fur" is a verb - as in, "Fur that cat!" which in translation would be: "Get the cat fur brush gadget thing and get the loose fur out of that animal's coat until it stops shedding all over the furniture!" And "fur time" makes perfect sense to me.
