Black People that listen to Classical Music

People of color enjoying classical music among other musical styles will be found in the orchestra pits as well as the audience at the symphony, or at home with their sound systems on, or driving past you with a local classical-format FM station tuned in or a CD or tape playing selections by Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Wagner, or more recent composers. Part of my ancestry is Choctaw and it seems more of an individual taste and upbringing issue--not race. The more brash and beat-heavy styles have always found audiences somewhere or other. I've not always been a steady music listener, but now enjoy classical works much more than previously and believe they bring a very healthy effect on the brain as well as the rest of our being.

then again, most of what we call classical was written by white composers, so there is a reason for non-whites to feel unconnected. we need to expand our Europeocentric view of classical. then again maybe not, because this is a certain unique tradition of music, and we can't lump others with it. but the designation classical isn't really good.

Yes, piqaboo and Shapley, it takes the better part of forty minutes at blazing railspeed to ride BART from the Pittsburg (no h there for economy reasons) station to downtown Oakland where I do various analysis and programming tasks for SFBARTD often while plugged into B.com.
I doubt that "Eurocentrism" is mankind's greatest error, bignaf, and my ethnic heritage is diverse. "Classical" is a short handle which covers a great deal of music including that of the Romantic period (in Europe).

To bignaf: PERFORMANCE of "classical" music has nothing to do with race - the world is a better place thanks to geniuses like Jessie Norman, Yo Yo Ma, Zubin Mehta, and countless others.
To BARTist: If you ever travelled on British Railways many years ago (before long-length rail welding was introduced) you may have noticed that the "clickety-click" rhythm of the bogey wheels hitting the rail joints was in 4/4 time - providing great extra percussion if during your ride you happened to be listening to a recording of (say) the Egmont Overture (which I contrived to do a few times).

I never really thought of that. Maybe I was paying closer attention to the music than the color of the skin next to me. Thank you for opening my eyes. I will pay closer attention to this.

There are many black people who listen to music, of course, but many are seen as especially uptight (or "posh" as we say in the UK) because listening to classical music for them (us) is seen as crossing some sort of social barrier due to the silly connotations that some people choose to attach to listeners of classical music.... does anybody get me?
