I'm all about bringing back older threads today...

Some cases of lung cancer are likely to have a genetic cause. I know my uncle, and probably my grandpa, who were both diagnosed with emphasema had a genetic vulnerability. Both were smokers, but both also experienced a faster progression of the disease than usual - their lung tissue was much more vulnerable to the ravages of cigarette smoke than the average person. Makes me very glad that my father quit smoking almost 30 years ago and my brother and I never started.

And my grandmother, before getting emphasema from smoking, got bladder cancer - often related to smoking. So, not only does smoking release carcinogens that can cause cancer in many areas of the body, but environmental and genetic causes of cancer are not always organ-specific. Depends on a lot of biochemistry which monkeyMD would be much more qualified to discuss than me. (eg - breast cancer occurs more frequently in women because it's associated with estrogen levels and estrogen receptors - men don't have anywhere near as much estrogen floating around, so don't develop this particular cancer as often)

Clarifications: emphesema is not a cancer. There are multiple genetic markers which are cancer-associated and there are also families that are cancer-prone.

A Y chromosome could be considered a cancer risk - all the people with prostate cancer have one.

I still contend that water causes cancer. Every single cancer patient on earth has consumed water. ;)

1. Artificial sweetner is fattening. 90% of those who use it as a sugar substitute are obese.
2. Never cross the road at a zebra crossing. Most cases of pedestrians being hit by cars occur at zebra crossings.

"zebra crossing". That would be where the striped equines walk across the path?

David, I like your additional point #1. I do, and I am. Perhaps I should switch to sugar.

Yes, Apparently zebras are a major traffic hazard in the UK. At least they've been able to train them to cross the street in designated areas.

Remember Jo the Crossing Sweeper in "Bleak House"?
As a child I did not quite understand what he had to keep sweeping away all day long, until someone explained that in Dickensian London the heavy traffic entirely dependent on equine motive power generated quantities of solid exhaust products that made it unsavoury, to say the least, to attempt to cross the street...

So why don't people who walk their dogs on city streets have the same attitude?
