Help in Finding a Quote

Postby DavidS » Wed Mar 29, 2006 6:51 am

I wonder if anyone of you out there can point me towards the exact original text of the sentence in Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, which I found paraphrased as: "God manifests himself in many ways, so that unchanged routine will not destroy the world"?
I need it for a translation project I have undertaken.
Thanks very much!

Thank you for the links, lliam.
I have tried the links and Googling too, and been able to download Malory's monumental work in 15th century English (stretching my Explorer's capacity) - have run searches but no luck so far in locating the exact text.
I may have to make do with the paraphrase.

David,
I'm not sure if this is what you're searching for, but anything is better than nothing at all! http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1251

The Wikipedia entry for this work contains a few links, too.

Thank you navneeth - I have visited those sites too, and so far I have not got lucky.
I have got a couple of friends from university English Lit departments looking into it for me as well.

BTW, Analog, you can delete your last post. As soon as you realize you double posted, just click the X in the upper right-hand corner of the second post and it will be deleted.

It looks like the delete button only works for a little while after you post. That's what I meant by "as soon as you realize." This seems odd and not how most forums are set up. Normally you can always delete your posts. Off to helping hand.

This is just my best guess, but the delete button only exists on the last post on a forum, if you were the one to post it.

I had a double post earlier today (cranky Internet connection at work - a paltry T3), and only the last one had the delete button on it.

That's correct, but it even disappears after a time.

I did a bit of digging, and in the "Arts on TV" thread, my message is the last one, dated 31 July 2006 (nearly a month ago), and it still has the X box.

Another one in the Pibgorn thread, dated 15 June 2006, still has the X box.

Found another one dated 07 Feb 2003, with X box.

BigJon@Work, check the bottom of this thread and see if you have the X box.

OK. It does disappear when a new reply is posted.

Thanks - I followed the link, and it's a bibliography of translations of the work into languages from Afrikaans to Welsh. What I was hoping to find was the English original of the passage I paraphrased, though on second thoughts a straight quote in 15th century English might not be all that comprehensible to the modern reader...

The reason I posted his page was this statement he makes a few lines down -

"I also own many of these volumes and would be glad to answer questions for scholars or collectors."

Sounds like the sort of fellow who'd enjoy an informed discussion. At least find out what junkshops he frequents....

He's actually a professor at U of New Mexico. This oughta get you there -

Hope i'm not meddling unduly.

Good luck ----

Thank you again, Analog, also for pointing me at his statement offering assistance - I have E-mailed my query to him.

You are not meddling - far from it, it's very civil of you to have taken the trouble.

I'll keep you updated with any reply I get.
