Singing legend Gene Pitney found dead
The star was discovered in his hotel bed
==============================================

American singing legend Gene Pitney has been found dead in his bed.

Pitney, who was mid way through a UK tour, was discovered in his bed at the Cardiff Hilton.

Pitney had played a show last night (April 4) at Cardiff St Davids Hall.

----------------------------------------------
Born Feb. 17 1941 Gene Francis Alan Pitney in Hartford, Connecticut.

Gene spent most of his youth in Rockville, Connecticut. Gene formed a band while a student at Rockville High School called Gene and the Genials. On leaving high school Gene headed for New York City and the Brill Building. In 1959 Gene Pitney joined with a young singer Ginny Arnell and recorded some songs for Decca as Jamie & June. After a stop at Blaze and some solo recordings under the assumed name, Billy Bryan, Gene recorded under his own name for Festival in 1960.

Gene's first hit came with his first recording under his own name, "I Wanna Love My Life Away",a song which he wrote himself. Gene was also a budding songwriter and tried to push his songs to anyone who would listen. Brill Building veterans Burt Bacharach and Hal David liked what they saw and formed an alliance with the ambitious young singer/songwriter.

Under the guidance of Phil Spector, Gene recorded a song for Musicor in 1961 that was to be his breakthrough hit.

"Town Without Pity" a song from the film of the same title, was a smash hit record in 1962 and the record-buying public began to take notice. Bacharach and David were churning out songs in the early 60's that Gene turned into hits: Liberty Valance,Only Love Can Break A Heart -- his biggest hit ever, and Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa.

Valance was inspired by the John Wayne/Jimmy Stewart movie of the same name, but the song was never actually sung in the movie itself.

Gene wrote [or co-wrote]songs for others like the Crystals with He's A Rebel or Ricky Nelson with Hello Mary Lou or Bobby Vee with Rubber Ball amongst others. during 60's Gene continued to make records: Mecca It Hurts To Be In Love, I'm Gonna Be Strong.

As big a star as he had become in the United States, Gene Pitney was an even bigger star in the United Kingdom. His publicist, Andrew Loog Oldham, acted in the same role for the Rolling Stones and Gene did some things with them. A song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, That Girl Belongs To Yesterday was recorded by Gene and went to number seven on the UK charts. He played maracas on the Stones' recording of Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away and piano in the background of other songs by the Stones.

Gene Pitney had 16 top forty songs in the USA from 1961 to 1968, and he had forty such songs in the UK all the way up to 1974. Gene was married with three sons, Gene was to start recording duets with one of his son's shortly.
Gene had also recorded songs in Spanish,German and Italian.

=========================================

Gene Pitney fans e-mailed to challenge The Hartford Courant's reporting that Pitney was 66 years old at the time of his death. But it appears that The Courant is correct and that some usually reputable sources are wrong.
Readers also offered their memories and condolences.

A Vernon reader wrote: "It appears that only Roger Catlin ['A Voice Of Distinction'] says Gene Pitney died at age 66. 'Like a Tony Perkins in a gang full of James Deans, the skinny kid from Rockville who died suddenly in England Wednesday at 66.' Other stories say he was 65. Birth date was Feb. 17, 1941, according to his bio, making him a young 65."

Apparently everybody else is wrong. The bios the reader was relying on, the editorial Thursday "Gene Pitney, Rock Pioneer," most of the recent stories I could find in The Courant's archives and every website about Mr. Pitney indicate that Mr. Pitney was born in 1941.

But Joseph Angiolillo, who said he was Gene Pitney's biographer, called the newsroom Wednesday to make sure The Courant got the birth date correct. Angiolillo said the correct date was Feb. 17, 1940. He said the birth notice appeared in The Courant on March 10, 1940, on Page A3.

The birth announcement found in the ProQuest Historical Newspapers archives confirms that Gene Francis was born to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Pitney of Rockville on Feb. 17, 1940. You might need a magnifying glass to read it, but it's there.

Another reader wrote, "I'd like to pass on my condolences to Gene's family. I live in England, and had the honour and privilege to be at Gene's concert in Worthing just two weeks ago. It was the culmination of a dream I had since the sixties. His songs defined my teenage years, and were a huge part of that era. I had a terrific boyfriend at the time. Sadly, I stopped seeing him, but fate intervened and we met up again four years ago and are now married. Gene's concert closed the circle, the performance was as ever, terrific. The passion and power remained. He was as good then as he was on vinyl all those years ago."

Another reader wrote, "I would just like to say on behalf of myself and husband how sorry we are on the news on Gene Pitney's death,it's very hard to take in as only 3 weeks ago my husband sat and watched him sing. Gene Pitney shook my husband's hand and spoke to him. It was something my husband had wished for for many years: to meet the man himself. He got that wish. Our hearts go to his wife and sons and any other members of his family. We are sorry. Many regards."

Another reader e-mailed about the chronology "The Rockville Rocket's Trajectory" on courant.com. The reader wrote, "The 1959 info: Pitney joins with Ginny Arnell to record songs for Decca as Jamie & June. IT SHOULD HAVE SAID JAMIE & JANE. THEY HAD A COUPLE OF SONGS. 'FAITHFUL OUR LOVE' AND 'SNUGGLE UP BABY.' HE'LL BE MISSED."

The reader is correct.

Hey Guys, does nobody have any memories of Gene?
I'd love to know a little about Rockville, Connecticut where Gene spent most of his youth.

Hi Lliam,

I'd never heard of Gene Pitney until I was in college. My roommate in 1971 had a Gene Pitney album which we used to listen to frequently. Something about his singing made his songs stick with me. To this day, when I see the title of one of his songs, I can still hear him singing it.

I didn't even know that he was still performing, but it is good to hear that he had such a long career.

Gene Pitney was one of the pop icons of my high school and early college days. His passing makes me all the more aware of my own mortality.

Over the last few years (since I moved to Vahjinyah), we've lost Gene, Bobby Hatfield, and Edwin Star, to name a few. It's getting depressing.

I honestly never heard of this guy or one of his songs. And I have heard a lot of pop music in my 40 years. Weird!

Well, most of his popularity was from 1961 to 1964, which means he was over the hill before you were born. I can't say that I'm as aware of the artists that peaked before I started paying attention as I am of those who helped style my musical preferences as a youth, either.

And, in spite of his popularity here, it seems the Brits liked him even better than we did. I know I have half a dozen of his songs on my music player.

Hundreds Mourn Death of Gene Pitney
04.13.2006, 07:23 AM

Condolences and flowers came in from all over the world. Gene Pitney, 66, who died last week while touring in Wales, was remembered during funeral services Wednesday as a friend and neighbor who, regardless of where he traveled, cherished coming back home to be with his wife and three sons.

"He loved being here, not in Hollywood," Somers resident Chett Ladd said.

Pitney, whose keening voice produced a string of hits including "Town Without Pity," died of natural causes. He was found dead April 5 in his hotel room a day after he had played a concert that fans claimed was one of his best.

About 300 mourners attended services at All Saints Church. Fans from around the country and the world expressed their condolences on the Web site of the Rockville funeral home that handled the arrangements.

During a long career, Pitney had hits as a singer - "24 Hours from Tulsa," "(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance," and "Half Heaven, Half Heartache." As a writer, he penned "Hello Mary Lou" for Ricky Nelson and "Rubber Ball" for Bobby Vee. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Mourners included neighbors and lifelong fans. Paul Gagliarducci, a longtime family friend, called Pitney "a man full of quiet generosity."

Linda Mallory of Chicago said she fell in love with Pitney and his music when she was 13 and traveled to Connecticut for his wake. She estimates she's been to more than 30 of his concerts since 2000.

"I was in love as I could be as a 13-year-old," Mallory said.

Gary Rue, of Minneapolis, who toured the United States with Pitney as his musical director for nearly 18 years, said working with him was a wonderful experience.

"I'm going to miss him, bad," Rue said.

Born in Hartford, Conn., Pitney married his high school sweetheart, Lynne, in 1967, and kept a base in Connecticut all his life. He built a recording studio in his home in Somers, 20 miles northeast of Hartford.

Pitney was buried in Somers Center Cemetery.

Barf, how long would it take to get Gene home from Cardif airport Wales, to Rockville?

Where's the nearest airport to Hartford or Rockville?

If I were going to Rockville from B'ham airport UK, what would be my nearest point to see where Gene lived?

My experience with airports in Wales is nil, so I don't know about flights from Cardiff to the US.

I'd guess the flight from Britain at less than five hours, maybe less than four. I'd fly into Boston if possible, but NY would also work OK. There is a reasonable airport in Hartford (been there done that got the T-shirt) but I don't believe they have customs for international flights, so Boston is probably your best bet. Hartford is a two or three hour drive from either airport, which is probably faster than waiting for a connecting flight.

A quick look at Birmingham International Airport's web site wasn't all that encouraging about direct flights to either Boston or New York. Looks like they go via France or Germany, with appropriate delays for going the wrong way.

London to Boston or NYC might be a better bet, or maybe you feel like digging more than I did.

Thanks for that Barf.

I was listening yesterday afternoon (Fri) to the last interview Gene did for the BBC, march 2005.

He Said, when he came to the UK he used to get up early in the morning, ½ hr drive to Hartford Railway Stn, catch a train to NY Grand Central Railway Stn, then by air to the UK.

He never said how long the overall journey took him from Rockville to England.

A couple of years ago, I was on about getting to New England, alas finances didn’t allow.
I still live in hope though. :)

Thanks again Barf much appreciated. ;)

You're very welcome.

It's really not all that far from Olde England to New England, especially by air. I know many people who work in NYC live in Connecticut (which is about 100 miles by 50 miles in size, so it's fairly compact) and take a train for most of the journey, so it's quite possible you could do that. However, I would probably rent a car wherever I landed and drive from there.

I know you'll be on the wrong side of the street (since I was the time I tried driving in Britain), but it's usually not fatal.

didn't recognize the name, but I did recognize a bunch of the songs... a loss to music...

It's about a 6 hour flight between NYC and London. Probably less than two hours by train from downtown NYC (Manhattan - Grand Central Station) to anywhere in Connecticut. 'Course it could take you an hour or more to get from JFK or LaGuardia to Manhattan depending on time of day - could take you 30 min....There are shuttle buses that go between JFK or LaGuardia and Grand Central (or Penn Station). Maybe called 'Super Shuttle' - can't remember. Just remember that it was only about $25 one-way a couple of years ago - pretty good for ground transport in NYC. Much better than trying to get into Mahattan via bus and subway from the airports.
