Vienna or Prague

Postby Marye » Fri May 05, 2006 1:55 pm

I am thinking of taking a vacation, in October, to either Vienna or Prague and I can't decide which one. The point of the holiday is for me to see an opera, celebrate a milestone birthday and to visit Eastern Europe, as I have never been. Maybe a two week trip. Possibly driving involved as well.

Any thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

Hello, Mary.

I can't offer any advice on either place, never having been. I hope you have a good trip.

I'm sure you've already researched this, but here are the opera schedules for Prague and Vienna:

http://www.czechopera.cz/index.php?sele ... th=10-2006

http://www.viennaconcerts.com/opera/october2006.php

Maybe something there will help you plan your trip. You can order your tickets online, too.

OH WOW!!!!!!

If you get the appropriate Eurail pass, its easy to visit both.

Both are lovely, wonderful, walking friendly cities. Prague is a tad less expensive in my memory.
If I had to choose one only, I think I'd choose Prague. My girlfriend spent a week there toodling around on city buses and having a marvelous time.

Oooh oooh oooh!!!! fun!

Hi Marye. Congratulations on your milestone. I have not been to either city, but several docents who went to Prague were very enthusiastic. That's Smetana and Dvorak country, and that would be a big draw for me. Let us know your decision when you make it.

I'd love to go see either of those cities! It's difficult to pick one that would tip the scales in favour of the other. Both cities have such history.

If someone were to twist my arm so I made a decision, I'll go with Vienna for the little cocktail weiners!

Congratulations, Marye...enjoy your 21 year!
I've been to Vienna but not Prague. History everywhere, walkable, make sure you foray into the Vienna Woods if you go. Never made Prague....all reports are it's quite beautiful...seems you can't go wrong whatever you decide, and as Piq noted previously, doing both may not be a big problem if it fits your travel style.

Also never been to either, but a friend spent a semester in Prague (~'92-'93) and loved it. I think she went back for a while after graduation too. Lots of American expats and students there at the time and easy to get around speaking English.

That's my 2 cents - have a great time no matter what you do!! :D

Thanks Shap! I looked at the Vienna schedule and I could see Madam Butterfly on my actual birthday (and GC how did you guess my age  ) or in Prague I could see Traviata... Tough choices... That is, of course, if I get there on my birthday. Nice idea Piq, that I could get to Vienna too if I took the train.. which we might just do. I like that. And Shos you think Prague as well. It was my first thought too as the Jewish Cemetery in Prague ... famous among graveyard goers who take pictures .... But... I would like to visit Mahler AND Dvorak and Smetana...

Mary,

No, you don't need a website, just a photobucket account: http://www.photobucket.com/

Prague~nice

Postby cryout_yea » Sat Jun 03, 2006 11:38 am

I've only been to Prague, but I have to say~ it is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever been to! In fact, I am going to revisit the place at the end of this month.

Oh, wait actually I think I will be visiting both cities this summer so I could share my preferences by the middle of August~

If you are planning to visit Eastern Europe for 2weeks, why not visit both? 2weeks would be enough to visit both cities. ^^

1. Leave Celine at home. Don't want to offend the Viennese or Prague-ians.
2. Take Ms. Universe with you so those folks can see 2 Canadian beauties!

I leave on the 28th of September

Postby Marye » Mon Sep 18, 2006 3:56 pm

Our trip is booked and we leave on the 28th of September. We decided on Prague, Vienna and Budapest. We have tickets to the Vienna State Opera to see The Magic Flute. Can't say I love the The Revenge Aria but I will put up with it.

What to take on the plane now..... :sing:

Sounds wonderful, but perhaps even I could put up with the Revenge in Vienna...

Take care in Budapest. Large protests are underway. There is resentment over the Prime Minister who lied to the public. It's a mess there right now.
