it depends what movement, but usually clapping between movements isn't in the music's best interest. it used to be customary to clap after first movements, even earlier it used to be customary to clap after any movement you really liked, and ocassionally encore it! at least in the premeire. I know it happened in several premiere's in the early 19th century. I think people should clap after the 1st movement of Mahler's 2nd. he requested a break of at least 5 minutes between the 1st and snd movements, because of their extremely different character, so clapping seems to fulfill that need.

I also think that the standing ovation should be used more judiciously.
personally, if the audience broke into applause between my movements, I'd be really happy. it doesn't fit the music, but it seems much more sincere that the obligatory clapping at the end. this will/would change if/when I become famous and well-established.

I was taught to watch the conductor's hands. If they dropped, it was OK to applaud. Otherwise hold the applause. Was I taught wrong?

There were certainly lots of movements, but now I think we can applaud for Marye, since it's the end of her trip.

I've heard that the only time it's OK to applaud before a concert piece concludes is after the first movement of a concerto that features a cadenza. The applause at that point is strictly for the soloist.
