I enjoy a lot of Strauss' (Richard) orchestral stuff. I went to hear 'Die Frau ohne Schatten' at the LA opera two years ago and was more impressed by the orchestral interludes than by the main scenes/songs. I prefer lush, melodic orchestrations and Strauss was certainly a master of those.

Adams: The Chairman Dances
Adams: The Dharma at Big Sur
Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 Eroica

This was a fantastic concert. I was very pleasantly surprised by both John Adams works. Excellent, both of them. I will request them on Beethoven.com in the next little while. I recommend checking them out! The Dharma at Big Sur had a solo electric violin, played by Tracy Silverman. It is a 6 stringed violin (2 lower strings). It's a wonderful sound!

What can I say about the Eroica, one of my all-time favorite symphonies? It was magnificent, especially the 2nd movement funeral march. The 1st movement was played at a slower tempo than what I'm normally used to, but it was still good.

This concerto was good, just not "great". I enjoyed the Paganini Violin Concerto the best.

Although I could appreciate the great solo violin and piano in the Paganini and Liszt works respectively, you could tell that the orchestral portion in the concertos just isn't up to the same level as to Mozart's, Beethoven's, Brahms' orchestral calibre. That's IMHO.

I won't necessarily rush out to get it, but I would like to eventually have the Paganini' Violin Concerto in my collection.

This is not a recommendation, but a point of information. His second concerto includes the popular tune "La Campanella". Maybe Liszt's piano version (or an orchestration) of "La Campanella" would suffice.

Apparently, the Ambassador of Norway will be in attendance. Part of honoring Grieg's 100th Anniversary of his death.

I have never heard either the Borealis by Canadian John Estacio, nor have I heard the Sibelius No. 5 Symphony, so I'm really looking forward to this one.

This was a very enjoyable concert. The highlight of the night for me was the Grieg Piano Concerto (my 1st time hearing it played in full). It has now instantly become a favorite of mine in the piano concerto field. Wonderful performance!

The work "Borealis" by Canadian composer Estacio was also a delight.

As for the Sibelius Symphony No.5, I'm a little mixed about my feelings about it. I enjoyed it, but not enthusiastically (Again, this is only my first hearing of this symphony). It had some lovely moments.

Next concert in 3 weeks, and one I've been looking forward to all season!

Sounds like the time I heard the 'Titan'.

This concert was excellent!

The highlight of the night was in the Brahms' Double Concerto. A riveting performance! The 2 soloists brother and sister combo of Gwen Hoebig (Principal Violinist of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra) and Desmond Hoebig (Principal Cellist - Cleveland Orchestra, and also former member of the Orford String Quartet) were amazing.

Wait....the highlight of the night was actually at the Intermission, when I went to pick up the preview to the 2007/2008 WSO season. Oh my goodness!!! What an amazing line up of concerts!!!

I will post shortly about this in a new thread.
