Gonna have to check the definition of "assault". Sounds to me like "accost" would have been a more appropriate label but if criticism of a politician is assault, then we're in a whole lot of trouble.

Doesn't seem likely. The Vice-President doesn't usually amble through the public square where you can casually approach him. Nor could he likely hear him from two feet away in a crowded public square unless he used something more than a 'very calm tone of voice'. The story doesn't quite seem to square with the reality of public political gatherings.

I also found this interesting:

My recollection of Tiananmen Square must be a bit different than his. I seem to recall tanks, clubs, and rifles being used there. But then, it has been a while since it happened, so maybe my recollection is a bit blurry....

Yup, Howards looks pretty menacing.

He acted funny and he was annoyed when we questioned him.... so we arrested him and are contemplating filing federal charges........

that's scary.

He acted funny so we kept an eye on him til the vp went inside.... that I get. Even the questioning him, I get. But the arrest is going too far.
The arrest part is extreme even for someone acting funny in an airport fer petes sake.

And that they arrested him ten minutes later, after he had gone to pick up his son and was heading back to the car.

I read elsewhere that a similar incident occurred in Chicago with Clinton. In a public place, someone yelled out "You suck!", and was arrested 15 minutes after Clinton left.

What happened to free speech?

That also happened in our area. The guy was arrested long after Clinton's limo had passed through. Weird.
