Expresso

The American Heritage Dictionary lists this as an acceptable form of espresso.

However, I believe the original use of Expresso was sought as a trademark for vending machine espresso - i.e. express espresso. I do not know if a trademark was ever actually issued for the drink.

I used the term in the coffee house thread because, according to tan, that is the spelling used in the name of the local coffee house in Sihanoukville. I believe she later posted that the establishment got a new sign with the spelling errors corrected. Both in the name of the beverage and of the country.

Aks is annoying to me too, but its considered an acceptable dialectical variation. <sigh>

barfle, yes, YES YES! I hate that term. I think everyone who's been orientated should be forced to lead the next orientatation, and be orientatatized.

Congratulations on reaching 400! I gotta post, post, post now, since you're catching up.

In the town in which I grew up, it was as common to say 'warshed' as it was to say 'washed'. Of course, we usually 'washed up' before going to dinner, we didn't simply 'wash' before dinner, and we surely didn't 'wash down'. We might 'wash down' the house, or even 'wash down' the car, but we always 'washed up' when it came to warshing ourselves. :)

Using a cellphone while driving has been controversial enough but now people are text-messaging while driving! :curse:

I use "on a daily basis" on a daily basis.

Based on my understanding, 'On a daily basis' is less exact than 'every day'. Every day means exactly that. On a daily basis means that it is based on a timetable of being performed every day, but is not as demanding. It is okay to skip a day if you do it on a daily basis, but you cannot skip a day if you do it every day, or you're, well, you're not doing it every day. Since I'm not an exacting kind of guy, I like to do things on a daily basis instead of every day. I don't like my regimen to be that strict. :)

'Daily', I'm not sure about. I am inclined to believe that, like 'every day', it is pretty exact. :?:

The three phrases "daily" "every day" and "on a daily basis" mean the same thing. They indicate an event or obligation which recurs in each diurnal period.

One of my pet peeves is the imprecise use of language. It causes far too much confusion.

Another pet peeve is the conviction of engineers that they can rewrite maintenance pubs, all by themselves.

I know how passionate you are about language, but I disagree. However, I cannot back this up with a definition of the phrase "on a daily basis", so I will simply offer my understanding of the relationship of the wording.

A doctor will not prescribe a medication to be taken "on a daily basis", because the term is not precise. Medications are prescribed to be taken "daily" or "every day". Such prescriptions are written on a daily basis. A doctor may, however, suggest that a patient drink a little wine 'on walk 30 minutes 'on a daily basis', allowing the patient flexibility in the regimen. If the patient fails to drink a little wine, or fails to make it for his/her walk, they are not in violation of the doctor's orders.

This past summer 5 recent local HS grads (all girls) died in an accident as the driver, it is currently alleged, was text-messaging and sweved in front of a truck. Why she didn't let one of the passengers text for her....Get so frustrated seeing someone on their cell while driving and they have a passenger. I generally ignore my phone while I'm driving, or if I think it might be important, pull over.

I saw some headline in the paper about a law banning text-messaging while driving - sure it will work just as well as the cell phone while driving law. that is, not at all. Saw an editorial a couple of months ago where the writer alleged seeing cops talking on cell phones while driving. ARRGGG! :curse: Don't know how many fatal accidents we'll need before people get the message about this!

Our club just put on our first Street Survival clinic on Sunday. One of the things we stressed is that driving demands your full involvment and texting is not compatible with that.

We had an SUV roll over during the clinic exercises. While it was not what we would wish for, in the end it also taught valuable lessons. Truck-based SUVs are, by nature, top heavy and more prone to rollover when their path is disturbed. The teen driver of the SUV got in another car and completed the clinic! Her Dad was present, and in hindsight, was actually glad it happened there in a controlled environment instead of on the highway where there are hard things to hit or be hit by. It was a sober bunch of kids we had after that. I was impressed how many wanted to complete the clinic.

Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to drive essuvees . . .

Chirpy phlebotomists. Aack.

I was at the doctor yesterday, got sent down to the vampires as usual for the usual bloodwork and the happy moron who drew my blood was sure she could use the right elbow. I told her I have three wiggly substandard veins on the right arm and one nice big vein on the left arm and that she should use the left. Nevertheless, since her station was set up for right arms she tried the right arm instead of moving her chair.

I heal quickly. It's a good thing. She eventually gave up and used the left arm.

Also, I suspect that the x-ray positions required for knee and hip evaluation are a screening technique. If you can twist yourself into those postures without assistance, you don't need treatment.
