My Weather Today

As of today we've have had 67 days of 100+ temps. since the first 100+ day, June 13, and tomorrow is forecasted to be 101. Sunday a cold front moves in and our high will be 80s and the low in the 60s, a Godsend.

It has been a horrible summer here in Noth Texas. We remain in a drought and are in state 2 water restrictions. My lawn...well it's not really a lawn any more. I do have some very green drought resistant weeds though.

Weeds are always drought-resistant, Haggis. I often think we cultivate the wrong plants. There should be an opening for a botany student's thesis- finding economically- and aesthetically-pleasing weeds.

Lowes sells 'wildflower assortment' seed packages, which are essentially packets of weed seeds, selected because of the abundance of flowering weeds in the mix.

Hopefully today is the last of the 100+ days. It's 102 on both my patio and the fence, usually the patio is hotter than the fence. Neither is in direct sunlight. 80s tomorrow.....

Labour Day marks the unofficial end of Summer, and it seems to have taken that to heart. Yesterday, the temperature was in the 90s, today it's in the 60s. A brisk North wind is blowing, and leaves are already scattering about the lawn.

Low 60's this morning... POURING RAIN.... Jenny & I got drenched on our morning walk. She is a trooper! Did not mind. Then again... I did have the umbrella over HER
while I got soaked... Wouldn't have it any other way....

We're far enough west and north to have missed Irene and the remnants of Lee - but downstate is getting soaked. Looks like might be major flooding in Binghampton, south into PA and probably hitting Mass and (so sorry) NH and Vermont again. Wish we could take all this extra water and send it to Texas! Happy it's finally cooling down for Haggis and other Texans!

We've been in the upper 60s the last few days. Friday-Sunday it was more summer like - Saturday and Sunday into the upper 80s. Today is supposed to get to 72, maybe 75 tomorrow. But then, by afternoon I'll be in 85 degree heat of Georgia! Only really going to be there for about 24 hours - a conference presentation - but as I'm not quite ready to let go of summer yet, it'll be nice.

Two more summer-like days here (81 chance of t-storms in pm), then the cold front comes through. By Thursday we'll have high of 59 - maybe getting to 65 by Sunday! We were very lucky yesterday - went to husband's annual department picnic. Line of t-storms and rain stayed to the south and east of us - a family that lives near where I work (~18-20 miles east, a bit south) arrived amazed that it wasn't raining and never did. Happy to be able to get the kids in the paddleboat on the canal.

After about a week in the 50s and 60s and rainy, as of tomorrow, we'll have had about a week of temps about 75-80 and sun! My brother posted on FB Saturday - "I'm in shorts. In October! In Rochester!" We always get a few really nice days - shorts-worthy - in October, but it always feels like something amazing. Brother's kids were in their pool this weekend, even. Next door neighbors to us were complaining that they had closed theirs a few weeks ago... Thing about a hot day in October here - it's only hot for a few hours, by 6pm it's already in the low 70s, by 7pm upper 60s...lots of open window evenings! I'll miss it when the cooler air and rain returns on Wednesday.

I'm in work today (Columbus day), but the kids are with the grandparents. Went to the children's museum this am, planning to hit a playground this pm. I should have two pooped kids by the end of the day!

It was in the low 90s yesterday afternoon on my patio and my tomato plants are happy and growing like mad. It's going to be warm again today. We're having a Santa Ana: warm air off the desert compresses and warms up as it drops toward the ocean and we get hot dry air here in SoCal. I'll be out watering again this afternoon.
