Politics

...is all about confirmation bias. Our brains seem hardwired to win arguments rather than find the truth. So when the appropriate sound bite comes along it doesn't even matter if it's true as long as it's what people want to hear. I think this is where litmus issues fall. Once the politicians get all their ducks in a row they can do whatever they want.

Dirty politics is about this bias. There's a famous story about LBJ talking to staffers about spreading a lie concerning his opponent. When they objected because it just wasn't true, he replied "I just want to hear him say he doesn't f**k pigs". Images like that will linger longer than any policy statement.

I try to be open about what I consider to be reliable facts that go against my viewpoint, but I doubt most people do. I see a lot of truth in what you're saying...

On a semi-related note - heard a political ad yesterday for a candidate for county DA - '34 DAs endorse candidate X'. Which, considering I do statistics for a living, made me instantly think, 'out of how many?' If it's 34 out of 40 - that's compelling. However, if it's 34 out of 100, not so much.... 34 seems like a large number of attorneys, but Rochester is a good size city - don't know if this is just in the DA's office he's running for, in the county at large... it's a number with no context. Makes we want to NOT vote for candidate X as he has a stupid ad. I try to ignore the ads - one of the few advantages to watching so little TV, I'm not barraged by them!

Also, about 12 position up for grabs on my ballot today...only 2 had more than one person running. I don't think democracy should be like this...
