Now I've really got a problem.

Postby annettehala » Thu Nov 28, 2002 5:23 am

Today wen I tried to listen the computer wanted me to download the Macromedia thing. That same download has come up on other web sites and the Beethoven Poll page. If I clikc *Yes* on that box it always freezes the computer so I always click *no*. Well the stream box simply won't connect unless I download that Macromedia. Then in :o frustration I did the wrong thing. I check the "always accept Macromedia content" box, so now every time I click "Listen Live" the Beethoven radio page freezes.
I don't know what to do now. I think I've tried everything. I think I won't ever be able to listen again!

Hi Annete,
try the following:
causes for hang/freezing can include:
>1. too many programs open at the same time.
>2. too little hard drive space left.
>3. hidden apps in the background (anti-virus, firewall, APM, are examples).
>4. one or more of your apps is hogging resources.
>5. lack of periodic maintenance ( remove unused programs, AV scan, scandisk, defrag).
>6. missing some critical updates from Windows Update.
>7. temp folders are full of files.
>
>some things to try:
>* a full system anti-virus scan using an updated program or online scan at:
>http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_pcc.asp
>
>* an online diagnostic check at:
>http://www.pcpitstop.com
>use the Help mode feature to save time.
>
>*open the Disk Cleanup Utility from Accessories, System Tools, to clean out the
temporary
>files on your computer.
>
>*run the Version Conflict Manager;
>click Start, Run, type: vcmui
>and press the Enter key.
>
>*run the System File Checker;
>click Start, Run, type: sfc
>and press the Enter key.
>
>let us know what works for you...
Lliam.

;)

Well I think I've tried everything short of reformatting the hard drive. I really don't want to resort to that, especially since the computer seemed to be in fine condition a few days ago before I tried to listen.
>1. too many programs open at the same time.
(definitely not the problem)
>2. too little hard drive space left.
(also not a problem)
>3. hidden apps in the background (anti-virus, firewall, APM, are examples).
(I know how those work and how to turn them off)
>4. one or more of your apps is hogging resources.
(I don't think so)
>5. lack of periodic maintenance ( remove unused programs, AV scan, scandisk, defrag).
(I defragged but it didn't work)
>6. missing some critical updates from Windows Update.
(The computer positively won't install most of those updates. I'm sure we're missing several.)
>7. temp folders are full of files.
(emptied them)
>some things to try:
>* a full system anti-virus scan using an updated program or online scan at:
>http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_pcc.asp
(I have the antivirus running)
>* an online diagnostic check at:
>http://www.pcpitstop.com
>use the Help mode feature to save time.
(that didn't seem to help)
>*open the Disk Cleanup Utility from Accessories, System Tools, to clean out the
temporary
>files on your computer.
(did that)
>*run the Version Conflict Manager;
>click Start, Run, type: vcmui
>and press the Enter key.
(It won't run this)
>*run the System File Checker;
>click Start, Run, type: sfc
>and press the Enter key.
(It wont' run this either)
Anyway, I positively don't know what to do. This web site and another radio web site won't run now because of that Macromedia download. Not listening is not an option, especially since we have a subscription to the other web site. :mad: :mad: :mad:

Just wanted to let you know that I still don't have the problem fixed. In fact I am on a different computer right now because mine won't even go to the Beethoven page any more. I'm going to reformat the hard drive as soon as I find the time. :o

Bravo! Ahh, the vagaries of computers. It seems they defy logic.
