hey brad,
nice pic. I wouldn't be happy to be an Iraqi with you against me! you know being a musician in the army would be an atractive idea if I were convinced that I were helping the nation that way. but i doubt that, so i don't think it makes a difference if I musicianate in the army or out of it (except that the army would probably limit my creativity-i don't know). If I join the army I'm going to join the army of the country I grew up in. I feel more allegiance to them (good allies of US) then US.

No solider hopes for war. Yeah we're trained to kill. Trained for the defense of a nation we love. Trained so that you can do and say anything you want. Trained to fill sand bags along a raising river to save homes and property. Trained to search for victims of natural disasters. Trained to guard hospitals and schools when the people that aren't trained to kill want to harm people like you. If you still can't believe in what I do, then I'm truly sorry for you.
My statement about intelligence my have been presumptuous of me. Some of your comments were leaning that direction. A man like you should know that military intelligence is an oxymoron anyway.
I just want you to know that I respect your opinions but want you to understand why some of us do what we do and respect that in return. God bless America.
[ 01-23-2003: Message edited by: FirefighterBrad ]

you know, hank, it be nice if we could all sit in our ivory towers and wax eloquent about rationality and the perfectability of man, but the fact is, not only is it not practical, it's not possible.
we live in a hectic, disordered world. you want to make it orderly and rational, and that's fine. you think applying reason to the world is a cure-all. but it'll never happen. because when you get right down to it, people are out for what's best for themselves and those dear to them, and all other considerations are secondary; logic, reason and the brotherhood of man be damned. conflicts of interest are inevitable, and you're just not going to change that.
and that's what war is. a conflict of interest. is it logical, rational, even healthy? no. war is a condition that will always exist, sadly. you can't just reform it away.
you're welcome to sit up in your tower for as long as you like, but the rest of us are down here in the real world, doing our best. progress may be slow, but face it, hank: in your insulated, cerebral world, you're not doing any good at all.
[ 01-23-2003: Message edited by: BenMurphy6 ]

However, I'm sorry to see your take on happiness. I believe Shos was right with his deflector shield metaphor. To me, you're living in the vacuum of deep space. At this point I'm really starting to become curious about you. Why did you bolt when I asked you to tell me more about yourself? "I'm outta here" seemed to have the ring of fear in it to me. What could you possibly be afraid of? Were I to speculate, based on what you've written so far, it seems to me you have a fear of focusing on anything, any issue, especially with regards to self-examination. Why would that be? Are you unsure of how Henry looks in the mirror in the harsh light of day? Could it be you won't share details about yourself (your profile is the blankest I've seen yet) because I or some others of us out here may ridicule you (even more than we have)? Do you say the things you say to bring all of this hostility down around yourself? I feel that you do, and you do it to draw attention and confirm to yourself that you're not good enough, and to confirm that you will be rejected.
I'm going to stop debating you, however, I'd like to talk more with you, and this forum is not the place to do that. If you'd like to talk with me, feel free to private message me with whatever communication you'd like. In case you're not aware, the private message icon is the one at the top of the post with the two people extending their hands toward one another. Please give this some consideration.
Jim
PS. Henry, could you please change your quote? This board is used by people of all ages and moralities, so the literal profanity is probably best left out of the board. Thanks.
[ 01-24-2003: Message edited by: operatenor ]

Brad, God bless you. I was in the Navy (nuclear mechanical operator on a submarine), and had wanted to be a Navy musician because I couldn't afford to stay in college. After the recruiter saw my test scores, he swindled me into that job in the parenthesis (I was intelligent, not smart!).
Ben (Murphy), love your picture, LMAO!
E, you're not the kid anymore!!! :D

Henry, I've also had the opinion that war, in any form, is bad. However, your right to publicise your opinion, however disagreeable to others it may be, was won with the spilled blood of patriots. In many other countries, posting a dissenting view like yours would result in your inability to reach your next birthday. If the citizens of those countries are ever going to have the liberties that you and I enjoy, people will die in the quest.
The problem is that the bad guys are willing to kill, so the good guys end up either dying or dying while trying. If I know that's my choice (and I'm grateful to those who gave me a lot more options), I would prefer to die trying.
The United States of America was not born from negotiations. Germany was not defeated in WWI and WWII through negotiations.

Red, there is an edit feature. Just click on the icon at the top of your post that shows a paper and pencil. You'll get a screen that looks a lot like the one you use to make the post in the first place.
The only drawback is that there's a little tattle-tale line that says something like "message edited by redlover73" at the bottom of the post. :D

My Deus! What happened here? Yes Red this stream did start with Women and the Vienna Phil but as we all know, on the BB streams can move in a different direction pretty quickly.
The only thing I want to say about the whole US Armed Forces and this evil war with Iraq is this: No matter what you think about this soon to be war, don't put it on the men and women who serve. Put it on Bush. Put blame where it's due. I have to many family members and good friends who serve to not support them. The majority of the country knows we have a Napoleon in office who doesn't give a rat’s ass about what the majority of the people in the country feel about this soon to be war. Keep in mind Bush went AWOL from the Air National Guard during Vietnam so he wouldn't have to serve and daddy bailed him out. Bush has no idea what he is asking of the Armed Forces to go to Iraq when he himself never served an honest day in his Napoleon existence. So HR please but the blame where it's do... not on the men and women who choose to serve.
