Wearing Orange on St. Patrick's Day

Postby Lynne » Wed Feb 09, 2005 10:06 am

Hey, Dan. The reason your mother was so upset with you for wearing orange on St. Patrick's Day is not because she feared your fashion taste! The color orange in Ireland, while a part of their flag, represents British/Protestant rule in a country that is 97% Catholic. The Orangemen of Belfast would regularly beat the tar out of Catholics. The color orange to an Irish person is the color of subjection, repression and so forth. Can you see why Mama Maselli would be so upset?
If you can't be with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with.

Personally, I wear plaid on St. Patty's Day...it hides the beer and corned beef and cabbage stains.
