Frequent references to "global warming"

Postby ClassicalGas » Tue Oct 23, 2007 11:01 am

Nicole: I listen to Beethoven Radio every day. Lately, I've heard you talk several times about global warming and about (can't remember who) going around the World interviewing celebrities, politicians, etc. You keep mentioning that the interviewees describe what sorts of unsavory things will happen "IF WE DON'T DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT".

I trust you realize that there are a LOT of people, reknowned scientists included, who don't believe we can (or even should) do anything about it. The fact that the Earth is warming is not in dispute; that part of the discussion is over. It's the follow-on questions that are at issue. Like "Whyis it warming?" and "Are Man's activities responsible for it?" and "What can we do to stop it?"

What I keep hearing from the media is that it's an accepted fact that Man is what's causing the warming, that the culprit is CO2, and that we need to stop producing so much of it. I dismiss these "facts" out of hand. Anyone who has read about the Earth's long history knows that the climate has gone through HUGE swings in temperature -- at the low temperature end, the Ice Age that covered Europe and most of the US with glaciers to the high end where Antarctica has palm trees. There is also the evidence that many scientists have brought up repeatedly that charts of CO2 levels vs. the Earth's mean temperature show that rising CO2 levels did not PRECEDE the rise in temperature, they FOLLOWED it. Why? The oceans are where most of the CO2 is dissolved. What the oceans warm, they can't hold as much CO2 so it's released into the atmosphere.

Bottom line, the Earth is now and has always gone through major temperature swings, and will likely continue doing it until it is finally consumed by the Sun. We don't know why it does, it just does, and we certainly can't do anything about it. I think you should be more restrained in your comments that imply that we need to do something about it. BTW, attempting to do something about it would probably throw the World into a 100-year depression; it will be VERY costly.

Hello, Classicalgas. Welcome to the B.com BB.

We have a discussion thread on 'global climate change', as they prefer to call it now (as if there was a time when the global climate wasn't changing!) over in the 'Debate Team' topic area, under "The Environment".

Glad to have you on board, and your views are always welcome!

The read I am doing is for a client in the area - a movie theatre that is featuring the new film called the 11th Hour about the impact humans have had on Earth and what will happen to certain cultures in the future. This client is hosting a screening for the film and if you were listening you would have heard my announcement that they are the sponsor of our music feature Film at 11 so this is real a commercial.

As for my personal view: Thanks for the post but I am concerned about the impact humans have on the planet. We have not been so kind to our host and I really believe we need to adjust our ways if we are to have a healthy planet, protect cultures, protect plants and animals, decrease cancer rates and have healthy water supplies. (To name a few reasons...)

If you want to debate the political angle - as Shap said you can bring it up in The Debate Team section. My area is not for that. Thanks!

For those interested the film airs tonight: http://www.cinestudio.org
