Forlorn in Detroit

The premier classical station in Detroit went off the air several years ago. It's a shame because I thought the format was good and the hosts were interesting. The owners decided to convert to an alternative rock format - yuck! I decided one day, naive as I am, to switch on the station just to see what the kids are listening to. The song that I heard was so disgusting and offensive to women that I had to turn off the station immediately. There was no attempt by the station to edit out language that is crude and obscene. I know you can hear such things openly in a dockyard or prison ... but on PUBLIC radio where children have easy access? Even the movie industry regulates their material more carefully than this. It is extremely disturbing to me that this trash is more commercially desirable in our culture in this country than great music that is immortal. I fear for our future.

Amen, Al. Taste, behavior, personal goals have been heading downward for decades. I think the film, Network, a very good movie, was the first film (that I noticed) with star power that used the f-word. Films, and later, music, started using unnecessarily crude language primarily for shock value. The fact that it continues to be a selling point doesn't say much for us as a society. It would be good if the FCC started cleaning things up. They don't seem to be doing anything noticeable. The battle between censorship vs free speech has been over for a long time.
A re-evaluation of parts of the constitution is long overdue. SENSELESSLY CRUDE free speech should be eliminated. Unfortunately, there is no one in this country with the guts and stamina to initiate a clean-up. So, as you say, the future looks bleak.
Shos

Amen to both of you. :( I hope "the powers that be" will move that filth to its own web, outside of the "world wide web."
