KDFC Has Been Sold

Postby classicalfan » Mon Jan 29, 2007 8:20 pm

Bonneville International Corporation which recently changed the format on WGMS Washington's commercial classical station and moved the music to WETA one of the two NPR stations in the area, has sold KDFC San Francisco's classical music station.

I don't know who the new owner is but this is not a good sign.

It remains to be seen what will happen if anything to this music on the radio in Northern California.

WOW...you guys aren't going to believe this. Just today, I received this email from our local classical music station KDFC from San Fran.

Listen Live
Dear James,

Have you heard the news? KDFC has been sold.

Yes, the future is uncertain, but here's the best way to let the new owners know how important classical radio is to you and your community. Share your thoughts, and suggestions on how we can make KDFC even better, in a KDFC listener survey.

As KDFC celebrates its 60th year of broadcasting classical music to the Bay Area, your input is more important than ever. Thank you for being the involved and engaged listeners that help make a great radio station.

Bill Lueth
Director of Operations, Classical 102.1 KDFC

I used to listen to KDFC a lot until Beethoven.com. I like B.com's style and frankly, KDFC could benefit from "lightening up a bit". They do not play movie music (which I like) and they don't have a BB. They do have a lot of features though like regular listener parties and contests. They also have an excellent community outreach.

Looks like some of this could change. They solicited comments from listeners and I was happy to give them.

I was not aware that you posted the same information earlier.

I too did the survey and hopefully that will be used to make the right decision on the future of the format and the station.

I am glad you posted too...that's what BB's are all about...sharing information. I too share your concern about classical music disappearing from radio.

It is due to the bad decisions that continue to be made regarding what passes for good radio and the assumption that anyone over 54 years old does not respond to advertisers that more and more groups of devoted listeners are not being served. This is sad.

That might be a correct assumption. I know I'm harder to get the attention of, anymore, and far harder to scam into what isn't as good a deal as they pretend.

Sandy Eggo doesn't have any worthwhile classical music, either. Thank goodness I have b.com and digital radio on my cable service. :victory:

Broadcasting as a business model is going the way of the horse and buggy. There are a few of them hanging around as novelties or as cultural icons, but about the only place people listen to broadcast radio is in their cars.

While I realize I'm no longer the target demographic of most advertisers, I do have money to spend on goodies. They don't call my generation a "boom" because we figured out how to make powerful bass speakers.
