Thanks, T/M, the flu surely tested
my health but now I'm better rested.
Not quite recovered but to my desk I've returned
to look upon the paperwork spurned.

Not in Italy, by eve or morn
was this opera's composer born.
So, as anyone can plainly see
the composer was born in Germany!

In eighteen hundered and eighty two
Garibaldi's soul from this world flew.
A hero and adventurer brave,
this composer beat him to the grave.

in 1850 Wells, Fargo, and Butterfield did found
a new way to safely pass money around.
American Express was certainly a hit,
and this composer lived to witness it.

In all the holiday shuffle and fluster,
I feared this game had lost its luster.
Or perhaps my rhyming grew too lame
and drove the readers from the game!

If we'd waited much longer to restart, I doubt
I'd have remembered which piece I was thinking about.
In order to provide you, dear reader, a map
to the solution, I'll compose a poetic recap.

In the ninteenth century the composer drew his first breath,
and during that same hundred years he passed to his death.
Born in Germany, before the year 1820 had passed,
the year 1850 was concluded before he breathed his last.
The composer had left us, to the grave departed,
Before the year of 1882 had started.

The work is orchestral, with soloists, too.
You've deduced that it's opera, that much is true.
It has more than one act, piece, movement, or part.
though there are not three in the work of musical art.

If I've correctly counted the questions between
my verses, we're ready for number seventeen.

Well, I have to say I am really appalled
to see that this 30Q has so long been stalled.
Perhaps of guessing our players grow weary,
or perhaps my rhyming has become to dreary.

Howe'er it be, I shall try, I must
to drag this game back out of the dust.
Perhaps a hint, or two, or four,
will entice some players to come back for more.

Though the composer was born in the German land
he wrote his music with a Frenchman's hand.
Though he not born of the same musical stock,
when I hear his music I often think of Bach.

I've not seen the work performed as opera or play,
but I have seen it danced in the form of ballet.
There are musical numbers played often and well.
It starts out nicely and then just goes to Hell.

"The Tales of Hoffmann" come to mind.

Les Contes d'Hoffmann, an interesting one,
but as a ballet I don't think it's been done.
Tales of Hoffman it is not,
This opera is set in someplace quite hot.

shap, Tales of Hoffman is Offenbach's only opera. Orpheus in his Underpants, uhh... in the Underworld, is an operetta.

According to Wikipedia, it was an Opéra bouffe, later revised to an Opéra féerie. An Opéra bouffe is defined as a 'type of operetta' while an Opéra féerie is defined as a 'type of opera'. In any case, the distinction between an Opera and an Operetta seems blurred, as we noted in our discussion of The Magic Flute.
