What is with WTMI taking on the WCCC call letters?

WCCC

Postby classicalfan » Tue Feb 06, 2007 4:21 am

I know that originally 1290 was WCCC AM and for a long time they did simulcast with WCCC 106.9 FM.

Originally the WTMI call letters were assigned to Florida where Cox Broadcasting ran the Beethoven format.

A few years ago, Cox dropped the format and changed to a Contemporary Dance music concept and the call letters and format were transferred to Hartford where Beethoven Radio currently resides.

Sorry folks, we are back to WCCC AM. We are no longer WTMI and now are WCCC AM. For those that listen to us in CT... If you have an HD Radio very soon we will be broadcasting on the 106.9 FM2 band. Our sister station The Rock 106.9 WCCC FM brocasts on the 106.9 FM1 frequency. With HD signals we can break the signals down into subsignals. So Beethoven Radio will be heard on the 106.9 FM2 signal soon! Now you can hear us state wide! We will still stay on the AM 1290 and Beethoven.com... no worries there. Connecticut's Classical Connection!

Does this mean the T-shirts I got last fall are already obsolete?

Yeah sorry... think how we feel! We now have a Mercedes with WTMI plastered all over it. We have to get that striped and redone. Not to mention the water bottles, CD stickers, caps, shirts, coasters, candy etc....

Well, you can send the Mercedes over to me. I'll take it off your hands.

That'll be one less thing you have to worry about. :)

I had suggested this would be the best thing that could happen for listeners in and around Hartford, here. I would have an HD tuner in my car if I were local. Check out HD Radio dot Com and HD Radio Home dot Com.

I wish I hadn't lost my original WTMI, 93.1 baseball cap (the first hundred were free). Now that would be a collectors item, but nowhere near as valuable as the Benz.

BTW...Nicole, at last check, HD2 streams do not require those hourly legal IDs with the call letters and city of license, or EBS/EANS tests, as the FCC is still treating them as ancillary signals, kind of like the old SCAs.

I will be traveling through CT on Thurs. I can't wait to hear WCCC/WTMI on my car radio. :)

Whatever happened to the idea of pod-casting the station?

A few years ago, I found a classical AM / rock FM combo somewhere else in the country. The web page I was reading had a cute line. They said they had Howard Stern in one side of their building and Sir Isaac Stern in the other.

Hello -

Yes we know that the HD does not need the call letters at the top of the hour but the HD will just be a pick up of our AM 1290 boradcasts and the AM does require the ID. So the ID will be hear on the HD too.

Working on the pod casting. We've been a bit sidetracked with the change of call letters and a few other things. Promise it will happen this month!

My new car radio must suck! I was traveling on I84 and I could only get your station clearly from the north Hartford city limits to New Britain. I was hoping your broadcast would be my traveling companion all the way through Connecticut. I was pretty sure it was a Ralph Vaughan Williams composition being played. I checked today and it showed indeed it was he playing at 8:58 and 9:09 Boy, do I miss the music log when I'm in my car. :)

When are you going to become a clear air station? :P

I'm not certain, but WTMI/WCCC isn't a very powerful station - I would guess about 100 watts, which won't give much coverage on the AM broadcast band.

I had them tuned in for a bit last fall when I vacationed in New England, but as I was departing Haatfud with my T-shirts and other generously provided goodies, I heard one piece, and HRH's announcement pretty much faded into the static.

My guess is that you'll need a laptop with a cell phone Internet connection in order to listen to the best classical radio station in your car.

The synopses.
490 watts in the day and eleven watts at night
We can't all have signals like this and that.

Cool! That pretty much predicts my actual experience. Thanks ai4i. I guess I should've worked an earlier start on my trip home.

Hopefully, next time you traverse through the area, you will enjoy this coverage.

Darn,

I'll be in New Haven in a couple of weeks, and it looks like I won't even be able to hear it live from there...

You should be OK during the day with a decent radio. The nighttime cutback will most likely lose you though.

I had hoped to have the opportunity to visit the B.com studios while in Connecticut, but the schedule doesn't allow for it. Flying into New Haven was more convenient than flying into Hartford. I'll be in Bethany on Thursday, but won't have time for a side trip.

Perhaps next time...
