Patchwork Symphony

Postby Catmando » Mon Feb 12, 2007 11:21 am

Ok, Beethoven.com fans,

I thought this might be fun. Use this thread to post your 'Patchwork Symphony', which includes 4 movements. They can be 4 movements from various symphonies of the same composer, or as I prefer, from 4 different composers.

I'm not a stickler for rules, but a standard format would include:

1. Allegro type 1st movement
2. Adagio/Largo (slow movement)
3. Scherzo/Presto/Vivace style movement
4. Allegro/Finale movement

Here's my "Patchwork Symphony":

1. Mozart - Symphony No. 40 - 1st mvt. Molto Allegro

2. Mahler - Symphony No. 5 - 4th mvt. Adagietto

3. Bruckner - Symphony No. 9 - 2nd mvt. Scherzo

4. Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 - 'Ode to Joy' Finale

:D

I have not given much thought to this, so here goes, off the top of my head:

Beethoven 5th #1
Mendelssohn 4th #2
Beethoven 9th #2
Tchaikovsky 4th #4

There, that's how much mess I can make of classical music.

Edit: I'd like to label my symphonies in hexadecimal. So this would be 0; the fun starts only until after I reach 9.

Hmm. No problem. Though this one would still be "1", because it's something. Hex "0" is still a nothing. BTW, hex is dead easy as long as you visualize it as the four-bit binary group. Some of us antiquated ATE users used to have to actually use it that way.

I saw "patchwork" and immediately got an itchy finger attack. Sadly, I'm stuck at work and all my fabric is at home. :curse:

I'm a bit Brucknerian (Brucknerish?)! :P

It's even EASIER if you have 8 fingers on each hand.

Regards,
Tim "too easy" B.

P.S. "too easy" as in "TWO EASY" (2E) which is my age in hex.

This was tough as there are SO MANY great movements in
SO MANY symphonies....

Here is my patchwork symphony

Mahler - Symphony No. 5 1st Movement
Beethoven - Symphony No. 7 2nd Movement Allegretto
Brahms - Symphony No. 2 3rd Movement Allegretto grazioso
Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 5 4th Movement

Wanted to stick Dvorak New World Symphony in there somewhere...

You still could TM. Your above symphony could be Symphony TMPW #1.

You could put the Dvorak New World Symphony movement in your next Symphony TMPW #2. :P

I had to pay attention to the "patchwork" part of this project; I do a lot of cutting things apart for the sole purpose of putting them back together. So, here's a real patchworker's attempt.

Beethoven's 5th, 1st movement.
This is heavily Disney influenced: the little triangular pieces persist in my mind, and the opening of the 5th will forever be accompanied by flying triangles. These are the patches.

Handel's "Music for the Royal Fireworks: Rejuissance Movement". These are the brights. Every quilt needs brights.

Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition: The Great Gate of Kiev". These are the darks. Brights need strong darks, or they don't work.

Tsaikovsky's 1812 Overture: the final movement. This is the assembly, where everything gets put together. The cannon is when the quilting is complete, and the church bells are the final stitches of the binding.

This is a very original and interesting Patchwork Symphony/Orchestral Work Selma. :) I love the double shot of strong Russian at the end! By the way, I love the Great Gate of Kiev, wonderful work is the Pictures at an Exhibition!
