Top Ten Non-Beethoven Symphonies

Let's start things off with a throwback to the very first Top Ten List Poll, but with a twist.

Top Ten Non-Beethoven Symphonies

Take a few moments to think of your favorite 10 symphonies (other than those written by Beethoven).

List them in order of preference: This is all important to obtain any meaningful result.

Submit your list to me via PM (the first person to submit a list will receive my list in return to ensure contest fairness as I will be playing as well )

Please have all lists in no later than Monday, March 5th, 2007 @ 6:00PM EST. I will compile the lists and release the results that evening.

Special Note:
I have changed the method of scoring each persons lists. As before, the person with the most matches wins, however in the event of a tie in matching, the person with the highest score between the two will win. It is the score that is calculated differently than before. I calculate the score as follows:

Value of Match * (1.00 - .1 * abs[placement difference])

In English this means if you have the number one match in your list, but you personally rank it as 5th:

Value of Match (1st place) = 10 pts
placement difference = 1st - 5th = -4

10 * (1.00 - .1 * abs[-4]) =
10 * (1.00 - .4) =
10 * .6 =
6 pts.

So if another person also names the 1st place match and places it in their 1st place slot, they will win in this scenario because the will recieve the full 10 pts.

10 * (1.00 - 0)=
10 pts.

Thank you for your list, jamiebk! I did receive a list, but just to be sure I have it correct I need clarification. I received 2 PM's from you: The 1st was sent at 2:55PM and I was able to read and save that one, the 2nd was sent at 3:00PM but I was unable to open it, so I'm not sure if you sent the same list twice (in which case everything is fine), or if you were sending a revision to your original list (in which case I did not receive the revision). Let me know if you tried to send a revision.

Which reminds me... to those of you that are new to this game, you can send as many revisions as you like up until the deadline. I will use the most recent list sent to me from a user that sends multiple lists.

I think I've listened to three symphonies from start to finish in my entire life, and five of them were Beethoven symphonies.

Okay, and I can say the same thing about Operas (though the ones I've heard were not written by Beethoven ). So here's a proposition for ya... a cultural exchange, if you will.

I will name one symphony that you will agree to listen to in it's entirety. In return, you name one opera that I will listen to in its entirety. After we both fulfill our agreements, we continue on to a second exchange... so on and so forth... until we trade, say 10? 15? (we can negotiate this) symphonies for operas and vice versa. You game?

Special Note: Wagner's Ring Cycle will not be considered one opera for the purposes of this agreement.
