I am totally game. What a great idea. I'll even limit the operas to ones that are listenable on their own merit - there are a lot that really need the visual component, IMO.

Re the Ring cycle, I want you to appreciate opera, not drive you screaming from it.

It's a deal. Let's lay forth some ground rules:

We'll exchange 10 selections a piece, one round at a time (after which time we'll decide if we want to continue).
We have 1 week to obtain a copy and listen to the selections we name for each other.
We alternate who names the selections first.
We name the pieces we have listened to entirely before we begin, my list is easy:

Bizet- Carmen

List the symphonies you have heard in their entirety. After that, I give you the honor of naming the Opera selection first in round 1.

Oh, And I Almost Forgot...

Oh, And I almost forgot the most important groundrule...

After we have heard each others selections, we briefly discuss them before we move to the next round.

Deal!

For me:

Bruckner 4th
Beethoven 9th
Beethoven 6th
Dvorak - "New World" - 9th???

I'm pretty sure that's it for me.

C'mon ya big chicken! Just pretend that symphonies have a bunch of people in costumes singing to them and tell me which one of them sound the coolest with that image in mind.

LOL. More of an inside joke. I started saying that all the time when I first did the Top Ten Polls, and after a few months of doing it, I noticed someone collecting data in a similar way used it. So I made a joke about it saying "Hey get your own catchphrase!" Too my surprise, the other person (I've forgotten who they were...anybody else remember?) took it seriously and lashed back about it. It was pretty funny to me, and ever since then I included the ® after it. :P

I know I asked permission to use it for the opera thread - and duly noted attribution, of course.

Maybe we should have done Top 10 individual symphony movements.

A Very Good Suggestion

Thank you for your list, Serenity! I actually considered doing Top Ten Symphonic Movements to start this back up again. I think that is an excellent topic and hope that it comes up soon. Perhaps the winner of this Top Ten will select it? Regardless, I am sure it will eventually turn up.

List count: 10

Oh, I forgot that the winner of the Top Ten gets to pick the next Top 10 category. Now I'm really excited!!! :owned:

Symphonic movements would be very interesting indeed. Perhaps that should also be a Beethoven and non-Beethovenized category. :)

I think Shostakovich Symphony #8 is awesome and I'm sorry I did not include it in my Top Ten list.

OT,

I'm shocked that you haven't at least given Mahler a try. Particularly so since so much praise has been heaped upon him here on the board (and not just by me!).

Since Hal has made the deal with you, I'll not Symphony Number 2 make any suggestions Symphony Number 2 as to which Symphony Number 2 you should try, but Symphony Number 2 you really out to check it out. Symphony Number 2

You need not be sorry. So long as you get them to me before the deadline, I will accept any list revisions. The most recently submitted list by any person is the one that counts, and I discard the older lists in this situation.
