Well, let's try the top ten works for strings.

That can be solo, duet, trio, quartet, quintet, symphony for strings, etc., as long as it's a work for strings. Feel free to further define/refine the definition if need be, Hal. It's not my area of expertise.

Well, literally speaking a String Quartet is a composition written for an ensemble of 4 string instruments, so in that context I suppose you have a point... :rofl:

BUT...

The string quartet I am referring to is a composition traditionally written for 4 specific string instruments: 2 violins, 1 viola, and 1 cello.
