Also plan on attending 1 event for the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, and 2 events on the Winnipeg Chamber Society (which I just came across and didn't realize existed). Only a few concerts for the current season remain. I'll definitely keep an eye out for next seasons' concert line ups for both these organizations!

The closest symphony to me, that I am aware of, is the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. I haven't seen them in years. They used to perform at Southeast Missouri State University on occasion, which is where I've seen them.

They will be performing Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in late April, which would be worth the trip if I can swing it. It includes some other works:

PURCELL/STUCKY Funeral Music for Queen Mary
ADAMS The Dharma at Big Sur
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 3, “Eroica”

I believe there are also symphony orchestras at Carbondale, IL and Puducah, KY, but I am not familiar with them. I will see if I can find any information on them and post it.

I know, I know! I should support the arts better than I do. I usually buy CD's so that I can listen on my shedule, rather than theirs. If I'm in the mood for Beethoven, I want to hear it when I'm in the mood to hear it, not wait a month and drive an hour or more to hear it. That, and the fact that I don't own a tux...

Oh my goodness! What a phenomenal concert it was. The Rite of Spring heard live is a must......it was immensely sensational and riveting! Loud and a little frightening at times, the tension left you uneasy in your seat, just fabulous!!

Satie's "Parade" was also quite interesting, had alot of "prop" instruments such as typewriter, siren, clip-clop blocks to mimick horse hoofs trotting, etc.

The timpani, percusssion and brass in The Rite of Spring was SO LOUD!!! Awesome!

I had the good fortune to attend a performance by our Santa Rosa Symponly on Saturday. The guest soloist was Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg
and she played (with the Symphony) Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35. OMG...what an incredible performance! Sonnenberg played like she was possessed. She has a very strange stage presence, but when she has the fiddle in her hands she is magical.

Anyway, It was certainly a night to remember and now, I cannot get the musical theme out of my head. I'll have to ask Nicole to play it or I'll go nuts.

I have a CD with her performing Mendelssohn, Saint-Saens, and Massenet. this one. I is really quite good, IMHO.

Glad you enjoyed it. Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto is certainly one of the finest!

I am principal double bassist with the West Hartford Symphony Orchestra. We have a concert this weekend (the 19th) featuring an all pops program. We will feature jazz, skat, and a host of traditional pops tunes. I play with a great group of musicians! Check us out! http://www.whso.org
