Traditionally, once a person has solved Opus X they would start leaving subtle (keyword: "subtle") clues to help the others along.

Is the man in the top row a picture of Beethoven with eyeglasses and a different haircut? :P

Seriously, the face reminds me of Beethoven (one certain picture).

I gathered that, but I think there is a resemblance. He had been my first guess before I looked at other pictures of Mr. Mahler. That's why I pasted one here for comparison.

What's with all this hue and cry about this being so difficult? The key is in not taking everything in literal terms, or assuming everything there to be directly associated with music. You don't need to inherit the powers of Holmes to find this one!

I don't think anyone's said for sure that he is a composer.
They've said identifying him is the key to figuring it out, but it could be that his name is a part of the composition, not the composer's.

What does Candide look like? :D
