David, I disagree with you on these. But this is only due to my personal taste and take.

Beethoven Symphony No. 3 "2nd and 3rd mvt" are it's bread and butter movements IMHO.

Brahms Symphony No. 1 (1st mvt.) emphatically!!! :D

Dvorak - Symphony No. 8 "the 2nd mvt. Largo), Symphony No. 9 "Opening mvt."

 We can agree to disagree.

hal 9000 wrote:Hmm, the poll question results are interesting to me.

1st movement: 3
2nd movement: 2
3rd movement: 1
4th movement: 3

Here is my interpretation of that data (purely unscientific, as it should be :P)

People like the beginning because it is loaded with exciting stuff. For the same reasons, they like the end just as much because of the finales. Now, the second movement comes next because people are still absorbing the good stuff they heard in the 1st movement. By the time the 3rd movement comes around, they have forgotten about the 1st movement and are anxious to hear the finales in the 4th movement, hence the lowest score.

What is your take?

:D

The results on the poll differ from my choices. My 1 to 20 showed the following:

7 - 1st movements
6 - Slow movements - Adagio style
4 - Faster tempo - Scherzi style
3 - Final mvts.

summarized further it shows a tie between the 1st/Final movements 10, and the middle movements 10

On that I absolutely agree with you. We can be the greatest of friends - you with a Canadian accent & me with a Brit accent and with differing tastes. Both of us - and many others of our friends here - admire and revere Beethoven, Brahms and Dvořák, among others...

Results

Postby hal 9000 » Mon Apr 09, 2007 7:09 pm

The long overdue results are in! From 8 lists submitted that nominated 52 unique movements from 16 different composers, here are your Top Ten Symphonic Movements by general consensus:

01. Beethoven- Symphony 9, 4th mvt 47 points...did you really think that this wouldn't be the winner?.
02. Beethoven- Symphony 5, 1st mvt 24 points.
03. Mahler- Symphony 5, 4th mvt 21 points.
04. Beethoven- Symphony 7, 2nd mvt 19 points from 3 votes with the highest ranking of 1st.
05. Beethoven- Symphony 5, 4th mvt 19 points from 3 votes with the highest ranking of 3rd.
06. Mozart- Symphony 40, 1st mvt 18 points from 4 votes.
07. Beethoven- Symphony 9, 2nd mvt 18 points from 3 votes.
08. Beethoven- Symphony 3, 2nd mvt 17 points.
09. Beethoven- Symphony 7, 1st mvt 14 points.
10. Dvorak- Symphony 9, 2nd mvt 13 points from 3 votes.

Much love was shown for the king of the symphonic form, Ludwig von Beethoven (receiving a total of 198 out of a possible 440 points (45%) for 13 of his 37 different symphonic movements). Mahler placed 2nd overall, receiving 73 points (16.6%) for 8 of his movements. Dvorak, 3rd, with 36 points (8.2%) from 6 of his movements. Mozart tied with Tchaikovsky (24 points, or 5.5% each), but surprisingly only 2 Mozart movements were named in this poll.

Interesting fact: Only one symphony had all of its movements nominated between all 8 lists. That symphony belonged to Antonin Dvorak, Symphony No. 9 "From the New World"

Here are the individual results...
