We have lost a Classical Music GIANT/LEGEND today.....
My heart is somber this rainy Friday morning here on Long Island....

Here is the Wikipedia site with info on his life...

Sad news indeed. I was just thinking of Bach's Cello Suites, and that his recordings of them are probably very good.

Terrible news, indeed. I did see headline yesterday, or the day before, that he had been admitted to the hospital for a second time.

I was just about to request something by Rostropovich just as Dvorak's concerto began.

How wonderful it is to hear
Rostropovich playing
Variations on a Rococo Theme - Tchaikovsky

Great Selection Y.R.H.!!!

Thanks,
TM

His recordings of the Variations are my favorite. No one does them better. It is a sad day indeed.

I cried for hours even after I found out! I wore black all day and everybody at my [high] school was too stupid to know of him when I told them I was in mourning....

My mom also played cello and got to meet him (and hug him!!) on account of her teacher, Raya Garbousova, so my house has been pretty gloomy since Friday morning. He was one of my mom's favorites (as I'm sure a lot of other people's), so she was pretty shaken.

R.I.P. Rostropovitch.
