Great concert, Barfle. It's good to laugh.

Good lead in to the depressing story of Bartok and the Concerto for Orchestra. The Hartford Symphony ended its "Classical Conversations" series with a 1-hour talk by Robert Greenberg on Bartok's life and the circumstances under which the Concerto was written. There was also analysis with examples. After intermission came th full performance followed by a question-answer period. During that period Greenberg observed that the Concerto was the last piece of orchestral music of such quality. The conductor agreed. I was surprised to think of 1943 as the year of the last great orchestral work. I had thought (without a particular work in mind) of 1950 (because it ends in "50") as a likely date. After some more thinking, all I could come up with for counterexamples were Prokofiev's 5th and Shostakovich's 10th, both between 1943 and 1950. Any thoughts?

I loved Figaro at the SDO last week. Sadly, I dozed. I havent been hit by the sleepies at an opera in a long time, but this time I got 'em bad*. I am pretty sure I heard the entire opera but I didnt see much over half of it, which is a pity because there were so many visual jokes going on. Every few bars, someone on stage would make a telling gesture or expression. It was hilarious.
* Can I get away with making this OT's fault? He was a wonderfully comfortable pillow!

Are we allowed to say "Good luck", or is that bad luck? I can never remember. Musicians and actors operate under different rules than the rest of us.

I don't know. I think you have to throw a bag of iodized salt over your shoulder if you say "good luck", or something like that.

A friend refers to them as being fun like a root canal without anesthetic is fun.

I think it well enough I can say that's it's not so much a matter of if I'll get to wear silly costumes again this year, but how many.

According to last Sunday's voice lesson, I'll be wearing at least four silly costumes this season, barring costume changes. The chorus master told me I was literally a few notes from getting 5/5 shows instead of 4/5, and the first of my two arias in the audition was above criticism.

I like being employed....

Awesome, congrats, er, old chap?

Along the lines of opera, Winston-Salem is doing "La Traviata" in October and Greensboro is doing "Rigor Mortis" in November...both by "Joe Geen".

Some of my favorite tunes there...the libiamo from "Traviata", the "Cackle Nome" and the one about the mobile donna from "Rigor Mortis".
