Richard Gere and India

Postby Giant Communist Robot » Thu Sep 27, 2007 2:49 pm

I really like Bollywood movies--great songs, entertaining dancing, silly plots. There is never any sex. I can't recall ever seeing a kiss in one. The audience these movies are made for don't want to see any of that.

It looks like Gere was unfamiliar with Bollywood flicks and the cultural values of the very people he was attempting to reach. I'd guess that his appearance at that AIDS event did more damage than good for his cause.

Shilpa Shetty, who looks like a victim here, is still in hot water. They want to arrest her. Maybe they should try to extradite and prosicute Gere, instead.

I like the driving rhythms of the Bollywood dance scene music, but the absolutely formulaic sameness of the choreography just makes me laugh. Show some spine, change it up a little bit. Maybe have one half of your posse point their arms upward wile the other half points them down . . . and get rid of the women singers who sound like little girls.

For years I thought the sameness in the vocals was due to some technique; turns out it was all Asha Bhosle.

Along the same line, Sharon Stone has been uninvited to the Shanghai Film Festival due to her comments about Earthquakes and "Bad Kharma".

Hollywood just doesn't get it. The rest of the world is not the United States. You're not free to speak your mind (or express your lack of one), or otherwise act without restraint in most parts of the world. Whether it's public displays of affection or public displays of stupidity, they'd really rather not have you express it.
