THIEVES RAID AUCKLAND PHILHARMONIC <BR> <BR>Thieves made away with a rare tuba and a contrabassoon <BR> <BR><BR>The Auckland Philharmonic had just completed a grand day, appearing with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, rocker Tim Hinn and famed mountain climber Sir Edmund Hillary at the Our Giants concert at Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, when musicians discovered that thieves had made away with a rare tuba, a contrabassoon and an amplifier from the orchestra's truck.<BR><BR>The theft of the tuba was particularlly distressing to orchestra member Jonathan Baker, who noted that it was a rare American model made in the 1930s and the only one of its kind in New Zealand. The value of the instruments was estimated at NZ$50,000.<BR><BR>Baker, who had only owned the tuba for two years, immediately issued a plea for its return.<BR><BR>28 January 2003

I started a post and then it vanished, so I may repeat myself with this one if the original turns up anywhere.<BR>The Philharmonia people recovered their instruments undamaged. Some guys found them, still in their cases, tossed into some bush. (i.e. a lot of trees.) Cue some delighted musicians! <BR>Today is fine and warm at about 24 degrees. That's C not F. I can't understand why Americans cling so tenaciously to Fahrenheit. Not to mention tons, miles etc. I don't think anybody else in the world still uses them. what makes it even odder is that when you tossed the British out in 1776 you changed your currency. Why didn't you go the whole hog?<BR>There are some very good East European orchestras and conductors putting out cd's which I think fall off the back of a truck somewhere, because they turn up here at about a quarter of the price of the big-name North American and Western European orchestras. They don't have any ego-tripping either- they just play the music, and do it very well. The only downside is that they don't have pamphlets telling you about the work.

I agree. I'm much more comfortable with the metric system. and Celsius. they are also objectively better. i sould point out that also the metric system uses tons which equal 1,000 Kg.

Too confusing. That's why we use what we use. It's what we've always (loosely used) done, and we're comfortable with it. Plus Americans are, in general, stubborn and rebels!<BR>Woo-hoo!<BR>Damn I forgot what else I was going to write.

after lots of sweat and tears I have the <I>first four chords for my trio</I> I had about two pages written but i trashed them. but since this is gonna be a chacone form piece so once I have the first few chords I can zoom through it. takes lots of time cuz I'm making a progresion of invented dissonant "chords". trying to make them sound like a progression and not just a series of chords.

i don't know how many of you were watching msnbc yesterday, but they had a former shuttle astronaut on for an interview. at one point, the anchor asked him what the crew is trained to do in a situation like that. he shook his head and said: "you just...close your eyes." that really struck a cord with me...
