Darn! I could have used the nickel, but I had to Google. I assume you are talking about the role-playing game "Living Island"? I've never heard of it.

David Hitchen's contends that religion poisons everything. I contend that without religion, there would be little to poison. There may have been atheistic cultures in our past, but none of these appear to have risen the level of greatness of the religious cultures that we recognize as 'civilization' (Ming the Merciless notwithstanding).

I can't even think of an uncivilized barbarian tribe without a religion. Neolithic fertility-mother-goddess clay dolls, animistic jungle tribes, my wild old Viking relatives, yurt-dwelling nomads, totem-pole carvers, you name it. If you grant "agnostic" and "atheist" their proper status as religions, or at least religious convictions, there are NO completely non-religious humans.

I don't think it's civilizations that depend on religion; I suspect it's something even more basic than civilization that religion addresses. I suspect that the concept of creation/creator and the assignment of control of natural processes to supernatural forces happened the same day we invented language and imagined the first abstraction.

Our little buddy BW seems enraged by some or all of the organized bureaucracies that claim religious authority. I find some of that stuff irritating, too. I suspect that most self-assured authorities need to be poked regularly, to let out some of the hot air. :poke:

Brainwaves seems to limit his definition of 'religion' to Hellfire-and-brimstone-preaching sects, and has trouble with that.

Hey Serenity!

When a man's an empty kettle
He should be on his mettle
And yet I'm torn apart
Just because I'm presumin'
That I could be kind-a human
If I only had a heart.

I'd be tender, I'd be gentle
And awful sentimental
Regarding love and art
I'd be friends with the sparrows
And the boy who shoots the arrows,
If I only had a heart.

Picture me ... a balcony ...
Above a voice sings low--

Wherefore art thou, Romeo?

I hear a beat.
How sweet!
Just to register emotion.
"Jealousy," "devotion"
And really feel the part
I could stay young and chipper
And I'd lock it with a zipper
If I only had a heart.

I only vaguely remember H.R. Pufnstuf. My wife was fond of the show, she tells me, and she mentions it periodically. I recall seeing it on television, but never knew the story.

I did like the Banana Splits, though.

I was 21, an NCO, jumping out of airplanes, a snake eater, teaching survival and other manly arts and every Saturday morning I was in barracks I (and my buddy Ridgely Rabold) would jump up at 08:00 to watch it. I loved it!

Nope, you can Google him, "Ridgely Rabold, Center for Advanced Pathology" he's still in the business though I suspect he doesn't do the altitude chamber anymore. The last time I talked to him, decades ago, he was working in the hyper-baric chamber at Walter Reed. Looks like he's done well for himself. I'll have to tell you the stories of Ridge's and my hero, Neil P. Caster; the last time he got busted he just sawed a stripe off the three he had to the two he was busted to.

Neil P. Caster

I dunno. I think you're still pulling my chain. next thing'll be this guy either invented Caster oil, or was responsible for a development in office furniture.

Religion may be simply a guidance system put here to steer us through our youth so that when we're older it won't be so painful to remember.
