Radio NZ Concert has started podcasting.

I'm listening to LvB's Symphony #7 performed by the Auckland Phiharmonia.

Being a podcast, it's in MP3 format, so the sound quality isn't wonderful, but it's better than you might expect, and quite tolerable listening. The APO is quite tolerable, too.

Thanks for the link, Dai!

(I'm so unfamiliar with these Chinese conductors!)

These podcasts need visual entertainment too added to the music!

Ya know, mp3s don't need to be compressed within an inch of their life. The compression rates are variable. I wonder why a classical organization wouldn't care more about the sound quality of their podcasts.

Personally, I use different compression levels and methods depending on the intended use.

I have a fairly large collection of digitized music on my computer (currently undergoing some reclassification) that is accessible to a program called "Media Manager" that routes it to my Verizon set-top box, and into my audio system. That is minimally compressed. I'm experimenting with mp3 and wma formats to see if there's an optimum point of size without noticable loss of fidelity.

Then I have my portable music player, which is mostly a 2GB thumb drive. I listen to it with tiny earphones in noisy environments (like riding on the DC Metro), so size is a factor, and fidelity is far less of one.

Try that with a nice light reisling. You'll be amazed how the slightly sweet, fruity taste of the wine complements that king crab....yum.

(thank you Selma) 8)
