percussion music for dance/philip glass?????

Postby violinist4ever » Sat Dec 08, 2007 9:25 pm

Hey, Everyone! I have a question for you guys.... I am looking for music for a dance class. I would like percussion music, or music along the lines of Philip Glass, but I'm having a really hard time finding music. Does anyone know of a composer that I could use? I've search a few already, but out of the ones I've found, Philip Glass is the best. I'm already using one of his pieces, so I don't want to use another. Percussion music would be better, but if you know of anything that will help, PLEASE let me know!! thanks a lot!!! :)

You might try René Gruss' website. If his music won't work, you might try following his "Cool Music" link to find other modern composers.

Some composers commonly associated with the minimalist movement, of which Phillip Glass is a part, are Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and La Monte Young.

You could ask Bignaf. If he hasn't composed something of his own to fit the bill, he will probably know someone who has. :)

I'm not a big fan of minimalist music, but you might try some of Steve Reich's music based on African Polyrhythms. I think we had a discussion about them here on the board. That is why I suggested contacting Bignaf, I think he was composing some works based on polyrhythms. Perhaps he's lurking here and will drop a note.

If you like Glass, you might also like Morton Subotnick. Don't know if it's dancable, though. "Meter" seems to be alphabetical by height for him.

well, my reply is about 3 months late, but I wrote a percussion piece which is minimalist. http://naftalischindler.com/popups/percussionquartet.html
I also have a polyrhythmic that would be a very challenging piece to dance to:
