The Gift of Life

Postby Catmando » Fri Mar 09, 2007 10:04 am

My sister faxed me a letter she received this morning, which brightened my day even more than it was already! :)

I thought I'd share this with you.

My father passed away almost 11 years ago, at the age of 54. Our father was an organ donor.

The Transplant Co-ordinator wrote back to my sister saying that the heart recipient of my father's heart is alive and well and continues to have a functioning heart transplant. Also, the recipient of my father's liver has had almost 11 years with the transplant, although now has recently been re-listed for a second liver transplant.

It is an enormous comfort, and a great joy to my mother, my sister and I to know that our father has in a small way (or large way as he had a large heart  ) helped the lives of other people.

It was a difficult decision to make at the time of my father's death, but it was definitely the right choice to make, and am pleased to no end that my father was able to help give the gift of life to his/her fellow human being.

Bravo! I'm a bit surprised that organs of that age would be useful, but it seems like another ten years after 54 (which is far too young to die) would indicate that it's not a problem.

You probably won't be seeing this today, but I also offer my condolences.

It's tough to lose friends, particularly those who have shaped you into the person you are.

Reflections on 2007.
This was a difficult year for me as I lost a number of friends & now family...

On December 31 at 3AM our phone rang.
I was hoping it was a wrong number but no...
It was my sister-in-law calling to let us know here husband (my brother-in-law)
passed away. He originally went in for surgery, (that went OK)
and then some other complications he was battling set in.
Long story... I won't get into it, but his death was totally unexpected.

His funeral was last Thursday and I coordinated all the church
music. In fact, I played a solo on flugelhorn (Somewhere Over the Rainbow)
at the end of the grave side ceremony as the family placed roses on
the coffin. Toughest thing I ever had to do....

I'm OK, just that we lost a great guy who was like a big brother to me....

TM....I am so sorry for your loss. It's always difficult dealing with such things and more so around the holidays. My wife's mom passed away last year on Christmas eve. This year was tough too...and so it will be I fear from now on.

Hopefully time will heal all and you will find your joy again. My condolences.

Jamie,
Sorry about your wife's mom.... that's really hard on Christmas eve...
Losing someone around the holidays justs makes the adjustment more difficult...

Again.. thanks to you and everyone!
time will heal... it's just the change that everyone has to get used to...

I'm going out with my other brother in law in a few weeks... and we are
going to guzzle down a few ales in his memory! I was supposed to
celebrate his return home but unfortunately that will not occur so we will have
a celebration drink of his life!

Regards,
TM
