I've lost one of my heros

Arthur C. Clarke died today. Among many other great works of literature, he is the author of 2001- A Space Odyssey, which, along with Stanley Kubrik's movie of the same name, exposed many of my age to some really amazing classical music.

Whenever I saw a book with his name on it, I immediately bought it. I'm going to miss his remarkable talent.

Yes...very sad to hear. I loved his books, his imagination, and his vision. He will be missed.

Me, too. The Deep Range was one of my favorite stories as a teenager. Clark and Norton and Heinlein and Asimov were probably the best influences on me, as a kid. I swear, they kept me sane through several of those rocky adolescent years by giving me a BIG dream to dream about. Often, sadly, during class...

I pulled "2001 A Space Odyssey" off the shelf and watched the movie last night. A very slow moving but thought provoking film. Still full of enigmas. It's amazing how well it as "aged".

Several years ago, I made up the idea that, in order to be well-rounded, one needed to know one's ABCs - Asimov, Bradbury, and Clarke. Yeah, I know that leaves out some other important ones.

Ray's the only one left. I bet he drops by Sandy Eggo every once in a while. I know he visited Orange at least twice (because I was there).

He will be sorely missed. Our paper said he wrote over 100 books - I can't even imagine! I know my dad's got probably a good 30-40 of them and was a big fan. I'm always amazed at how some people think science fiction is just fluff, but the best authors have ideas that turn into reality. Probably only 1 out of every 50-100 ideas, but still, for someone as prolific as Arthur C, that's a lot of imagination that someone figured out how to actually achieve.
