Cool. Very, very cool, and fascinating to an over-the-hill engineer like me.

I would describe Scott's invention as an oscillograph - a device that pictures a signal. I had no idea such a record existed, but anyone who did would be able to decipher it with the tools we have available today. It's difficult to determine exactly how the recording is done, but it might have been possible that the trace could have been transferred to a 3-D medium (like Edison's) for reproduction, it would have been a pretty tough task before all the image analysis tools we have with computers today.

The article had an audio copy of the recording - fascinating! I would love to see a high definition copy of the "phonautograph" recording and see if I could analyze it like Scott intended to. This is the kind of stuff I love!
