New thread, unfortunately its advent seems to be way over due.

Charged With Cheering At Graduation

Six people at Fort Mill High School's graduation were charged Saturday and a seventh at the graduation for York Comprehensive High School was charged Friday with disorderly conduct, authorities said. Police said the seven yelled after students' names were called.

"I just thought they were going to escort me out," Jonathan Orr told The Herald of Rock Hill, about 70 miles north of Columbia. "I had no idea they were going to put handcuffs on me and take me to jail."

Is this really, really a good use of police time?

What on the earth has happened to the national sense of proportion?
Sheesh. :disgusted:

I know two moms whos 3yr olds dance with Altoid. Both moms are stressed because next year their darlings go into preschool/daycare fulltime, and they'll "have" to switch to evening dance lessons.
Altoid misses half a day once a week. This is not an acceptable solution for these moms. Gimme a break. What are the kids going to miss? Recess, snack and finger painting? Rhiemann sums? Parsing?

The idea, I take it, is to render the child incapable of drinking and driving by leaving him sobbing uncontrollably in the fetal position.

On a Monday morning last month, highway patrol officers visited 20 classrooms at El Camino High School to announce some horrible news: Several students had been killed in car wrecks over the weekend.

Classmates wept. Some became hysterical.

A few hours and many tears later, though, the pain turned to fury when the teenagers learned that it was all a hoax—a scared-straight exercise designed by school officials to dramatize the consequences of drinking and driving…

“They were traumatized, but we wanted them to be traumatized,” said guidance counselor Lori Tauber, who helped organize the shocking exercise and got dozens of students to participate. “That’s how they get the message.”

The plan was to tell the truth to the students at an assembly later in the day. But word that it was all a hoax began to spread before the gathering. Tauber said some counselors and administrators revealed the truth to calm some students who had become upset.

Doofuses, I grew up in the era of “Don’t trust anyone over 30.” These dumb kids just learned a valuable lesson all right, but not the one the school thought they were imparting.

This one deserves a perryhead Image

I'm curious to hear the other side of the story, regarding the kids getting arrested for shouting at the graduation. Yes it sounds stupid, but that is one side of the story. Might it have to do with WHAT they were shouting? For example, horrible obsceneties, in a public forum? I'd go for a little police brutality in that situation. ;-)

During my HS senior year, we lost a couple of students to car wrecks and one to cystic fibrosis. While some of the students lost friends and were upset about it, the teachers seemed far more upset than we were.

I'm not saying that it's wrong to be upset over the loss of a friend, but we would have considered anyone who reacted that way to be somewhat displaced from their rocker. I lost a friend in a car wreck (that he was clearly at fault in) and was pissed at him for being an idiot.

And the hoaxers should have just experienced a career-changing event.

When we expect overreactions, we get overreactions. And today, at least in our schools, we really expect grief on the scale of 911 for everything; just another example of the “wussification” of America’s youth.

My 9th grade class lost three members when they drown when their raft was blown out in the gulf; three tried to swim to shore and perished. The fourth kid stay in the raft and if came to shore a few miles and hours later; they were idiots and panicked. We felt bad for their families and I think we had a "moment of silence" in school but I don't recall we did anything else. I had a paper route and rolled my papers with the younger brother (8th grade) of one of the kids who died. He was hurt and grief stricken but I don't recall that he ever missed more than 2-3 days on his route since I had to take part of his route that bordered mine. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 71 or 72, good kid.

In this incident the kids should have known it was a hoax; there weren't dozens of "grief counselors" parachuting in, as there would have been in any other tragedy, squirrel getting run over, rain in San Diego, reports of new Paris Hilton arrest, etc.

My senior year we lost two students, one in an auto crash and the other when the crop-dusting plane was piloting went struck electrical wires and went down. Both were sad occassions, with much weeping but no missed days of school or grief counsellors. We dealt with it as we dealt with all tragedies and deaths, with the consolation of friends and family, and by continuing our routine.

I frequently hear on the news, after a student or groups of students die (which probably happens in a high school of any significant size at least once to each four-year class) that this or that student was 'popular and outgoing', and the school sends in grief counsellors and calls off classes. The news interviews classmates who tell us what a wonderful friend he/was was, and teachers who tell us what a brilliant student or great athelete he/she was. This always leaves me wondering: what happens when unpopular kids die? Do they ignore it? Do they send in grief counsellors anyway (probably, IMHO), who wonder how come they aren't needed? Do they cancel classes?

Unpopular kids in my day were nerds and geeks. The popular ones were jocks. The most famous last words uttered by jocks are something like "Hey! Watch this!"

Geeks, by definition, generally knew better than to try something stupid; hence fewer dead "unpopular kids"

In the South we are more grammatically correct so it's more like "Hey yall! Watch this!!" Results are generally the same

(Ed. " noticed that you've pointedly ignored the "homemade parachute incident”, the "Knifely Kentucky cannon incident”, the "Lacy's kumquat bush insect removal incident" and, my personal favorite, the "remote detonation fire ant extermination incident")

(Me. I see no reason to clutter the conversation with rumors, events of plausible deniability...and damit, the fire ant thing worked, I just didn't foresee how far a fire ant hill can spread in the wind when exploded!!!"

I must not be reading the same papers?
Our local schools get the grief counselors after highly publicized deaths usually killings.
'Hey, watch this!' gets treated as it always did. The kids who know the dead/injured child/young adult react as they do, and the whole school is not formally informed.
Drive by shootings, school shootings, etc get the counselors made available. (off the head remembering)

Or maybe I need to read the paper more carefully? We saw a squashed skunk last week. I'll need to check which school district it was in to see if they sent in the counselors.

Colleen Leduc had to fight charges of child abuse leveled by her daughter’s school. Terry Fox Elementary hadn’t covered itself in glory when it came to Elizabeth — they lost the girl on several occasions — but the accusation and its basis was the last straw. They had the word of an eyewitness for evidence, although eyewitness is at best a loose term in this case:

Leduc’s weird tale began on May 30, when she dropped young Victoria off for class at Terry Fox Elementary and headed in to work, only to receive a frantic phone call from the school telling her it was urgent she come back right away.

The frightened mother rushed back to the campus and was stunned by what she heard - the principal, vice-principal and her daughter’s teacher were all waiting for her in the office, telling her they’d received allegations that Victoria had been the victim of sexual abuse - and that the CAS had been notified.

How did they come by such startling knowledge? Leduc was incredulous as they poured out their story.

“The teacher looked and me and said: ‘We have to tell you something. The educational assistant who works with Victoria went to see a psychic last night, and the psychic asked the educational assistant at that particular time if she works with a little girl by the name of “V.” And she said ‘yes, I do.’ And she said, ‘well, you need to know that that child is being sexually abused by a man between the ages of 23 and 26.’”

And, unbelievably, they used the word of a psychic to file a complaint with CAS. The agency opened a file on Leduc, but it didn’t take long for the Canadian authorities to figure out what had happened. Thanks to Terry Fox Elementary’s previous incompetence, Leduc had attached a GPS device and an audio recorder to her daughter — which proved that nothing untoward had happened to her, other than to be in a school run by idiots.

Class Act – Not!

The first warning sign of Robert Novak’s brain tumor was a car accident in July. Novak was driving in Washington and struck a pedestrian without realizing it; the tumor had damaged his peripheral vision. The pedestrian was not seriously hurt. An old Novak nemesis pounced:

Joe and Valerie Wilson, attempting to breathe life into the Valerie Plame "scandal," issued this statement: "We have long argued that responsible adults should take Novak's typewriter away. The time has arrived for them to also take away the keys to his Corvette."

Thanks to my tumor, the Wilsons have achieved half of their desires. I probably never will be able to drive again, and I have sold the Corvette, which I dearly loved. Taking away my typewriter, however, may require modification of the First Amendment.

Even I am surprised at just how despicably Wilson and his wife continue to conduct themselves.

The LDS church backed the winning measure that restored the “one man, one woman” definition of marriage to the state constitution after the state Supreme Court overturned it as a statute. From profane billboards to violent protests, the anti-8 demonstrators have focused their ire on Mormons, and now two envelopes of white powder have turned up in the mail at the Mormon Temples in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City:

The FBI says a letter containing a suspicious white powder sent to a Mormon temple in the Westwood area of Los Angeles was not hazardous.
The temple was evacuated Thursday while a hazardous materials crew tested the substance and determined it was non-toxic.

A temple in downtown Salt Lake City received a similar envelope containing a white powder that spilled onto a clerk’s hand. The room was decontaminated and the envelope taken by the FBI for testing. A spokesman for the Salt Lake City Fire Department says the clerk showed no signs of illness, but the scare shut down a building at Temple Square for more than an hour.

It was depressingly predictable that some protestors would eventually move towards terrorism. They’ve assaulted old ladies and threatened more violence, all because they lost on a ballot proposition. In fact, they lost by over 500,000 votes and almost five percentage points, 52.2% to 47.7%.

It wasn’t just the old ladies and Mormons who opposed Proposition 8.

I have no problem with gay marriage, as long as the recognition comes through legitimate political means — either through referendum or legislative action. (Ed. He said, confident that he will be dead, buried and dust before it even reaches a referendum in Texas) California voters have now twice stated by referendum that they do not want to grant government recognition of marriage to same-sex couples.

That’s a pretty clear message that the people of California do not want a public policy that gives official recognition to same-sex couples, outside of partnership contracts.

And its also a pretty clear sign that those in favor ought to keep trying.
The margins arent huge.
In my lifetime, it couldnt have gotten to the ballot.

Its funny the weight tied to the word "marriage".
So many against samesex marriage are divorced, which doesnt say much of their supporting the 'sanctity' of marriage.

I have dear friends on both sides of this issue. While I respect those who are agin it,especially those in long term marriages (first ones), I have to say I disagree with them.

Katrina Children "Sickest Ever"

Even before the storm, they were some of the country's neediest kids. Now, the children of Katrina who stayed longest in ramshackle government trailer parks in Baton Rouge are "the sickest I have ever seen in the U.S.," says Irwin Redlener, president of the Children's Health Fund and a professor at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health.

Some kids may end up with permanent developmental and cognitive delays, but many can still be helped. The first step will be finding them. FEMA was supposed to provide Louisiana with contact information for the families that moved out of the trailers; it has not done so.

Okay, let me get this straight: They have determined that these kids are sick and need services, but they can't find them to get them services.....

Perhaps they should ask the people that surveyed the kids where they found them.......
