Sadly, the Mexican Hat Dance turned out to have been played by the massed brass bands. Very nice and all but not what I was hoping for.

Anybody know where I can get the Mexican Hat Dance played on massed bagpipes? That's so insane it's got to be a classic, somewhere...

Going retro you may want to check out 'The Incredible String Band'. Although, they're sound is more rennaisance than what would be considered traditional. Fun band, none the less. All the albums have been re-issued on cd(2 LPs per cd)and are available at Border's. There's a cheeky band from Scotland called 'Enter Haggis' you may want to check out, also. They do some very funny stuff like playing the Mexican hat dance song on bagpipes. Kind of like a celtic Spike Jones/Weird Al group, but much funnier than either of those hacks. Saw a band last year at the Highland games in Edinboro, PA called 'Bad Haggis' whose fusion of trad/jazz with a piper may be what you're looking for. And another band from Australia called 'Brother' have a rock/trad thing going. They feature the didgereedoo quite a bit. The aforementioned Gaelic Storm has a new fiddle player named Bob Banerjee who's classical/swing background is going to infuse them with a new direction, I'm sure. He's from India and is refered to as the 'Round Brown Mound of Hindu Sound'. One of the funniest people and best fiddle players I've ever heard. Pretty sure if you plug any of these names into your search engine you'll be able to come up with several websites featuring their music. Good Luck.

for the first time since I acquired it, I am listening to the last part of The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King: The Complete Recordings. There is a lot of music there. I am listening to it on the double-sided DVD. The set contains (4) CDs and (1) double-sided DVD which contains all of the music on the CDs.

Very enjoyable.

I've also added a few CDs to my collection recently, which I haven't listed here:

I Solisti Veneti performs those excellent versions of Vivaldi's mandoline concerti which B.com plays regularly. I also have a CD of Albinoni's Adagios performed by them. This seems to be their first recording of music by a composer who is not Italian.

The Carmina Burana recording I ordered was featured on B.com recently. I have several recordings of that work, with the recording by Levine being my favourite. I enjoyed the Ormandy recording when I heard it on B.com, so I thought I'd give it a try. It includes "bonus tracks". I have not yet had the opportunity to listen to it. Hopefully, this week will present the opportunity to listen to all of the new CDs.

No. I don't have that yet. It looks like an excellent set, and I've added it to my wish list. I may order it next time I place an order from Amazon.

I have enjoyed the Concertos for the Emporer, but I really enjoy the Bassoon Concertos and the Mandolin Concertos.

I have the Vivaldi Masterworks set, which I commented on earlier in this thread. The performances are good, but not great, and it is missing a number of my favourites, such as the mandoline pieces.

I also have a two-disc set entitled Vivaldi: Glorias which I think I posted a link to earlier, and it very good if you like his vocal works.

Yes. I was just looking them up when I saw your post. Lacking an opus number, I wasn't sure. But looking at Barnes & Noble's selections for the two, they have an "Hob." number, whatever that is, and it is the same for both piano and harpsichord recordings. For example, the Piano Concerto No. 3 and the Harpsichord Concerto No. 3 are identified as Hob. XVIII/3.

It's a collection of 15 CDs previously released by Sony and its subsidiaries, featuring Leonhardt as harpsichord soloist/accompanist/chamber player, organist, and conductor. Lots of new music and composers, some of whom I had not heard of, to explore.

And, The Art of Fugue, played by the Emerson String Quartet.

I'm not sure if Gardiner has completed his. There's a contender, I suppose.

The Bach - Masterworks Complete Edition contains them all, but they are the collected works of various artists.

Barnes & Noble list two sets, but they appear to be the same, under the baton of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, first released by Telarc in 1994 and re-released by Warner Classics in 2007. It is the Warner Release that lists Leonhardt in the top credits, but he appears on many of the individual track listings on the Telarc Set, leading me to believe they are the same.
