Altoid is a natural skeptic. The first year she got a stocking from Santa, she looked at me in all her incandescent delight, and asked "Did Santa really come here or did you do this?". And she takes things & trust verrrrrrrrrrrry seriously.

She'd see thru the bridge tale unless we swore it was true. I'm not willing to abuse her trust to that point. So, we give her some silly stuff, but given who she is, we're careful. We're working our way up to it. OT does more of it than I. OT has persisted with the Velveteens since she was born (those dark brown animals with striped behinds that you can see at the zoo? They are where we get velvet....)

When she reaches 6 - 7 yrs old, I think it will be more 'open season' on the made up stuff.

My favourite Calvin & Hobbs involves Calvin asking his dad how they determine the load limit on bridges. His dad explains that they just keep driving heavier and heavier trucks across them until they collapse, then they rebuild them and put up a sign.

probably a grain of truth there, too.
if you find old engineering magazines from 1890-1910 era they're full of mechanical engineering disasters - bridge collapses, boiler explosions and the like.
Mechanical engineering failures are way more spectacular than computer crashes.

Anyhow, today's manufacturing standards and building codes evolved through decades of hard lessons.

The company I bought my computer from has an ad. in this morning's paper. They're advertising PCs and laptops running XP Pro., not Vista.

if you find old engineering magazines from 1890-1910 era they're full of mechanical engineering disasters - bridge collapses, boiler explosions and the like.
Mechanical engineering failures are way more spectacular than computer crashes.

There is an excellent book for laymen that deals with structural theory: Strucutres; Or Why Things Don't Fall Down by J. E. Gordon. It discusses such things, and it is entertaining. It's been a few years since I've read it, but I recall it being a good read.
