Happy St Patrick's Day

 Happy St Patrick's Day!

:toast: :toast: :toast:

MacNamara's Band

My name is Macnamara,
I'm the leader of a band,
And though we're small in number,
We're the greatest in the land.
Of course l'm the conductor
And l've often had to play
With all the fine musicians
That you read about today.

The drums they bang, the cymbals clang,
The horns they blaze away,
Macarthy puffs the ould bassoon,
Doyle (And I) the pipes does play.
Hennessey tuteily tootles the flute,
The music is something grand,
And a credit to ould Ireland's boys
Is Macnamara's Band.

Whenever an election's on
We play on either side,
And the way we play the fine ould airs
Fills every heart with pride.
If dear Tom Moore was living now
He'd make them understand
That none can do him justice
Like ould Macnamara's Band.

We play for fairs or weddings
And for every County Ball,
And at any great man's funeral
We play "The Dead March in Saul."
When General Grant to Ireland came
He shook me by the hand,
And said he never heard the like
Of ould Macnamara's Band.

Just now we are practicing
For a very grand affair
It's an annual celebration,
All the gentry will be there.
The girls and boys will all turn out
With flags and colours grand,
And in front of the procession
Will be Macnamara's Band

HA! happy St. Patricks day to everyone from me as well.

I have a friend whose birthday is today (yep...March 17th). A group of about 12 of us are getting together to celebrate. I asked the organizer where we were going for the party, thinking of course that we'd hit any number of local Irish pubs. Nope...we're headed to ........................ El Torito. The reason given was that it would be less crowded.

PS....at least the guacamole is green...as are the margaritas :sombrero:

Happy St. Patrick's Day! My big plans are to have a couple of sips of my husband's Guiness tonight. He's the one who officially has Irish blood - mine is vaguely assumed (mom's family came over in the 1600's from England and Scotland, for sure, but might have been some mixing with Irish and French, but we're not sure). Gotta wait for Oktoberfest for me - 1/2 German!

Just felt bad, though she won't know the difference, that I didn't have any green clothes for Bella - t-shirts and nothing good to layer over them, but it's only getting up to 57 today (and was 33 when we left the house). Pumpkin wore his green-striped shirt with a little convincing.

Here's an interesting comment regarding green beer on Saint Paddy's day.

Makes you wonder about the transplants on this side of the pond...

Happy St Pat's Day, all y'all.

Altoid doesnt much like green but was happy to buy a green skirt at a garage sale recently, so she could avoid being pinched. (She has mean parents).

Its hoping I am OT forgets to wear green so its an excuse I have for egregious bad behaviour.
Altoid - curiously strong.

I think most Irish people would be shocked at the hoopla in the USA.

I thought St. Paddy's was yesterday, so I wore my green shirt . . . I'm in all blue today. :dunce:

Pumpkin is wearing a tie-dye shirt that has some green in it - I think mostly so he doesn't get teased or anything at school. He said recently that he wasn't sure he wanted to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, as St. P drove all the snakes out of Ireland and he feels sorry for the snakes. He knows it's an allegory, thus, I think why he's not objecting TOO strongly, but it's obviously not on his top ten holiday list...
Bella, meanwhile, woke up and the first thing she said was, "It's St. Patrick's Day, can I change into my daytime clothes?" After about 20 min she was back in jammies, as the pants she picked are like sweatpants with a nylon-like shell (they have a green stripe down them) were a bit too warm for my hot-blooded daughter! She ended up in jeans (hand-me-down from Pumpkin complete with ripped knee) and a t-shirt my folks found for the kids (actually, again, her brother's as it's too small for him now) that says 'Irish and Italian - Potatoes and Pasta' with the flags and foods, and is green, of course. Her dad is 1/4 Irish and 1/4 Italian, thus why my folks bought them... It's actually supposed to hit 60 today, which is why I didn't object to the t-shirt. That and yesterday was 'pajamma day' at daycare and she spent the day with no complaints in t-shirt and shorts jammies! Daycare is having corned beef and cabbage today...not so sure how well that will go over, but snack is green grapes and green mini-cupcakes!

Selma - did you hear what problems Orange, the Brit mobile phone operator, had when they wanted to set up their network in Ulster?

I remember reading in a History of Ireland that, although St. Patrick is credited with ridding the island of snakes, a Roman general who was there before St. Patrick's time reported to the Senate that there were no snakes on the island even then. So I take it St. Patrick had an easy job of it, in any case.

Maybe they mean he drove the English out...
