I was shocked to see the level of attack that particular spammer used.

Does anyone really click on those spam links? What possible purpose can there be to such attacks? Is it there intent to render the bulletin board useless? I know of at least one bulletin board that had to shut down and relocate twice due to such attacks. Surely that's not all it's about.

I guess I'll never understand the mentality behind it.

I don't know how much you saw but the entire board was flooded. We have all seen
the occasional jerk get through but this was truly unfortunate.
I don't understand it either. It makes no sense but to just be disruptive.
Wouldn't it be nice if you could trace the individual(s) responsible for this garbage
and prosecute them.
Some people have WAY too much time on their hands...

I did see it. Unlike yourself, however, I did not think of a way to contact them other than posting to the board or clicking the 'report post' button dozens of times, which didn't seem productive given the nature of the beast. I'm glad you had the presence of mind to call them and leave a message.

They do this to implant viruses. If people click on the links then they can piggy back a virus into your computer. That's why firewalls are so important! Most of these people are overseas so you can not track them down. Russia, Asia and the Middle East are the worst areas on the globe right now for hackers to hide and not face arrest. It is becoming a huge problem.

Logged in this morning and all but one thread had vulgar smut on it...

Chris (et al) sorry to say that you will have your hands full today cleaning off the smut that hit the board. These latest attacks are particularly egregious/offensive. I clicked on one entry to report it, but will not touch any other entries by the pig who placed them. I don't know who or what this "ASAlerdedareefO" thing is...bot or human.

Yikes! I'll remember to not click on suspect topics in the future. Already had work computer die, then hard drive failure 6 weeks later (less than a year ago) so the sanctity of my computer is very important now!

I just shot off a PM to Chris when I saw the list. Bearing in mind the nature of these things, I suspect that it is only a matter of time before "report this post" becomes the trigger for a download, if it isn't the case already.

We think we figured it out! Cross your fingers but we put in place even more security but all should be OK now. Let us know if you have trouble or see anything pop up again. Thanks for your understanding. These spammers are so tricky. They crashed the Twitter website today and the problems just keep growing. And of course they are all in Asia or Eastern Europe so you can't do much back at them.

Apparently, the also crashed Facebook. I suspect it is part of elaborate plot to undermine confidence in our security and disrupt the economy. But then, I'm one of those that sees a terrorist behind every tree, right?
