I would say that Jamie and OT together, with over 13,000 left-leaning posts, more than offsets my 12,000+ right-leaning posts. Haggis and BigJon are the only really right-leaning members I can think of, although I think BigJon might not like being tagged a right-winger. I don't think Haggis would mind the label. Barfle is mostly libertarian in his views, putting him close to center. Shos leans to the left, IMHO. It's hard to peg some of the others.

Right, left, & center, however, are moving targets. One man's right may be to the left of another. When I was in school, I was taught that it wasn't a line, but more like an Ω. If you go far enough to the extreme left, you'll get very close to the extreme right, and vice versa. I believe the space between was identified as 'anarchy', though I don't see how that fit the theory. This was based on the idea of 'Fascism' being the extreme right, and 'Communism' being extreme left. 'Fascism', as we know it, is usually related to 'Nazism', which is derived from the National Socialist Party. 'Communism', as practiced, usually identified itself with 'Socialism' as well, as in the "United Soviet Socialist Republic". This would place both the extreme right, "Nationalist Socialism", and the extreme left, "Socialist Nationalism", pretty much at the same place, making it a circle rather than an Ω, IMHO.

I consider myself somewhere in the middle, too. I know I'm well to the right of OT, though I'll acknowledge that I am also apparently well to the left of a couple of folks. I used to be a flaming radical feminist, but the definition of that category has shifted in the last forty-five years and I'm pretty ordinary now.

As far as social policies are concerned, I doubt there's anyone to the left of me. However, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if I'm the most fiscal conservative person here.

That would depend on what your definition of 'is' is, as former president Clinton would say. You're wanting the government to expand its' spending authority by billions, if not trillions though a take-over of the health care network in the hopes that it will save Americans billions by no longer have the authority to spend it themselves. That does not strike me as 'fiscally conservative', since I believe conservatism has more to do with allowing one make ones' own spending decisions, not having the government do it for them.

That might be because you aren't looking at the bigger picture. Why does fiscal conservatism have to end at politics?

Fiscal conservatism ends when you stop deciding how to spend your money and start deciding how to spend mine.

I'm looking at the 'big picture', but I see it differently than you. 'FIscal conservatism', politically, deals with how public monies are spent, and also how much money will become 'public money'. I've no doubt that you want the public monies wisely spent, but I also have no doubt that you want to expand the range of public monies by expanding the spending authority of the government, presumably in order that more money may be 'wisely spent'. I don't see that as 'conservative', fiscally or otherwise. Conservatism in the sense that it is commonly used, supports the concept of a government no larger than is necessary to meet its constitutionally-defined duties. There are arguments among conservatives as to the exact limits of those duties but most conservatives want less, not more, government control of spending.
