While I'm on this thread, I might as well mention that the Auckland Philharmonia (with some help from its friends) played Mahler's 6th symphony the other night. It was broadcast live by Radio NZ Concert.

I'm afraid I'm still not much of a fan of this work. I have a recording of it, and neither rendering grabs me. I think I'm simply not sympathetic to the state of mind that Gustave Mahler was in when he wrote it. I've always wondered how someone could write "Songs on the Death of Children" before the event, and this symphony is in the same vein. Mahler's troubles came after, not before.

It didn't help that the broadcast was poorly engineered. I know what an orchestra sounds like in the Town Hall, and the broadcast was quite thin and flat by comparison. Odd, really. RNZ usually does better.

Sorry to hear the Mahler wasn't up to par. I've not listened to the 6th in a long time, I can't recall that it impressed me as overly good or bad. It's not one of the more memorable of his symphonies.

Just got my OrKIDStra tickets in the mail - first one is Nov 1 - Carnival of Animals. More likely to take Bella than Pumpkin this year - she's really into music - sings all the time, stopped in the mall yesterday every time we went by a store with music coming out, will dance to any music in movies (especially at the end credits), etc. Pumpkin still gets twitchy after about 20 min... Bella won't sit still, I'm sure, but she'll like it.

Well done OT! I just saw your note now... SDO season I note has two Verdi operas, one Pucini (everyone's favourite one though I believe you love Turandot) --and Gounod's Romeo and Juliet. Wonderful season.

COC this year has Madama Butterfly, Carmen, Otello, The Flying Dutchman, Donizetti's Maria Stuarda, Idomeneo, Stravinsky's The Nightingale and Other Short Fables. I have not seen the Donizetti or Stravinsky's operas before. I will miss the Ben Heppner concert. I was off on holiday when the tickets came on sale. Sigh.

Anyway, congratulations OT. As always, you will be brilliant.

Hello, Shos. Welcome back! You've been silent for a while.

The St. Louis Symphony is opening their 2009-2010 season with Mahler's 5th. I hope to make it up there, but my schedule has been iffy, so I haven't bought tickets yet. They may well be sold out by now.

They will also be performing Azul by Osvaldo Golijov. I am familiar with neither the work nor the composer.

I see from Wikipedia that Golijov is credited as composer for the soundtrack to The Man Who Cried. I enjoy that soundtrack, specifically for Salvatore Licitra's peformances of Bizet's Je Crois Entendre Encore from Les Pêcheurs de Perles. Most of the soundtrack comprises variations on the theme of that work, although there are couple of unique works, as well.

My son Fish informs me that Rodrigo y Gabriela are playing at 4th & B on October 10th, 8pm, tix are $35, and Ticketmaster has 'em. Is there any interest in the event?

SWEET! I tried to get tickets for Sept 23rd's performance in San Fran, but the $35 tickets were standing area on the main floor only. I didn't want to stand for the whole time in the crowd. Hope you fared better Selma. Enjoy the show. I'd love to hear your commentary afterward.

My wife went to school with Piscopo's brother...she knew both of them. Joe is a pretty good drummer in addition to his remarkable Sinatra imitation. Glad to hear that he is still performing. I wasn't sure what he was doing lately. Sounds like a fun gig.

PS...nice to hear that you are getting some opportunities to play as well.
